Every inch the gentleman and scholar... (Reply to this comment)
by mrkstvns
Indeed, Estimado Jefe, you have done justice to the man. There is a reason why mshawpyle has been on my trust list since such a thing existed --- he is one of the very, VERY few people on the site who NEVER pander to fools, idiots, or the unlearned masses.
Unquestionably a writer who deserves respect.

You write: MSP's reviews are greatly missed by all of us. He does have very good reasons for spending his time elsewhere; I only wish things were not as they are.
Yes, I know. (I haven't -- yet -- had the privilege of meeting him in person, but we keep in touch.)
Still, he is missed. And ought, as you say, to have been publicly honored by many of us long before now. I hope your piece will introduce him to a new readership.

MSP could write a review ... (Reply to this comment)

of the phone book and I'd sit there, slackjawed, rereading it for the sheer joy of imbibing his prose. And, yes, he is unmatched on the site for trenchant analysis and intellectually honest debate.
And he can be damned funny, too.
Thank you for so ably profiling my favorite Eps personality. Perhaps you can shame him into writing us some more.

The man's a hack.
No real scholarly attainments at all.
And he hardly even writes for the site any longer.
Besides, he's grumpy. And rude. And does NOT play well with others.
What? Sorry, say again? Oh. OH. You meant ME?
Well, then. Never mind. Very kind of you.
(But still insane.)

He's the guy who (Reply to this comment)

once informed me in my newbie days that the WC was "a bread and circuses fop", among other colorful descriptions, in the comments section of an eloquently scathing article about certain Epinions rapscallions, tea sips, and all-around tadiddlywonkers who needed to be locked in the stocks in the public square if I remember correctly. It made me guffaw as I visualized a time traveler from the 19th Century wearing an Abe Lincoln suit, who used to have lively discussions over a spot of tea with Samuel Clemens and others. But that's just me.
His review on the care and feeding of Ruger .22s was about all I ever got around to reading lest the aspirin bill increase to the point of homelessness and starvation.

Way to go, Grace. I don't blame you for keeping his TR hat where it belongs, but I do hold you responsible for being smart enough to know that mere recent contributions do not a TR make.

It surprised me to no end that the entire group who first contributed to this category didn't mention MSP. My own reasons for not writing him up were feelings of literary inadequacy. A wee bit of singlemalt overcame that nasty feeling, though, and here it is.

Thanks, sweeps. I hope Pyle drops by on occasion so he'll know he wasn't left out of the HoF. He needs to be there - needed to be there from the very beginning.

I doubt I understand him all that well, but like the judge who described porn, I know a good writer when I see him. Not that Pyle wrote porn. At least, not that I know of.

He is one of the most intellectually powerful contributors at Epinions, and his style is vivid and lively. I wish he would write more often.

The reason why Markham still wears the TR hat in Books is because he is what TRs should be... well spoken, intelligent, and solid. He's a true gentleman besides. I can't think of anyone on the site more deserving of HoF status.

you said...
"Rather, he required them to reach for the rafters on which he hung his premises and further required them to stretch thought and imagination until the reader could encompass the theme he presented. Yes, sometimes one needed a dictionary."
Ahhh. I remember well my first encounters with some of his thoughts. 'Stretch' indeed. But it always felt good after the mental exercise.
An excellent nomination indeed. One that I would think few could take exception.
Very nicely said.

A Most Worthy Contender (Reply to this comment)
by kcfoxy
Not so very bad prose here, Dwight.
I agree this anointing is long overdue, and remember MSP as a fellow book lover who once described the most perfect upbringing, in which parents encouraged a child to keep reading a particularly wonderful, engaging chapter or two rather than do almost anything else.
When he alludes to himself as the Boll Weevil I am reminded of a handsome blond actor with a toothsome grin and a deceptively soft Southern, (versus Southwestern) accent...Val Kilmer, to my mind could have played a younger Markham, with nuances of humor, great civility, graciousness, and yet a certain avenging steeliness about his cloud of genius.
After 'meeting' MSP on-line, I was quick to add Dictionary.com to my profile page. He stretched my brain, not letting me settle for less than a full examination of all sides of an issue rather than a mere cursory read.
Low country Summer nights doing the Shag will always be associated with your fine addition to the Epinions' Hall of Fame, as will the Boys of Summer, lazy afternoons spent on a Cantina barstool and Pyle's facile way with a bar tab.
Besides all you've enumerated here to share, and perhaps do a bit of consciousness raising, MSP's picture should be in the unabridged dictionary next to the word Class.
More than a few times when assaulted by the slings and green-tinged arrows of mouth breathers, our fine friend has come to the aid of yours truly, secretly thrilling me with the healing balm of his brilliant, yet still gentlemanly tongue lashings.
Thank you for rightly placing MSP's name as one long to remember about everything that was good and fine about this site. He truly raised the bar for all of us, and I feel honored to have been counted among his friends.

MSP is the first writer I read here, and reading him persuaded me that writing here myself would be worth pursuing. How well I remember those early intoxicating days!
I remain an avid fan. And I only say "fan" because I'm sure that "groupie" would embarass him, even though that would be a more accurate term.
Well done, Counsel!
