| RockyBug's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 8100 Series |
The amazing thing is that my company actually got some new laptops for loaning out to employees who travel on business. The Dell Inspiron 8100 is a breath of fresh air and we had better breathe all we can, because they will not be replaced for quite a while.
I got to use one of the Inspiron 8100’s quite recently and was blown away by all the features. It has the Pentium III with 866 GHz, 128 MB of RAM, 56K modem, 20 Gig hard drive, and a magnificent 15 inch screen. To be honest, as the RockyBug always is, a DVD/CD-RW was not a necessary addition, but really neat to have while traveling. Our company got a group of these wonderful laptops at less than $1,600 each.
We are fully committed to Dell products at the office with our desktops. To be fully compatible is a great feature of any product and Dell is no exception. Same programs can be run on both with no interchange problems and downloading from one system to another is a breeze.
The Inspiron 8100 has the same workable feel to the keyboard as the desktop. My fingers get kind of achy on some keyboards and are really unworkable on the Palm Pilot keyboards. The speed of the Inspiron 8100 is a thing of pure beauty. It speeds over the Windows 2000 like it is standing still.
I have gotten used to screens with rather low detail resolution. The Inspiron 8100 screen is just great. The colors are sharp; figures are crisp; and no bleeding from one graphic into another. This is as true when using the DVD as well as any program.
Are there any downsides to the Inspiron 8100? But, of course there are – but you have to be pretty particular to get annoyed at them. They don’t call me “RockyBug, the Particular” for nothing. The battery life is fairly short. I was only getting about 2 hours, 15 minutes and this is truly not acceptable. The Inspiron 8100 also weighs about 8 pounds that can be kind of cumbersome while trying to juggle other carry-ons in airport lines or hotel check-in lines.
I still remember that scene out of Apollo 13 where the astronaut takes the press corp into the computer room and proudly exclaims that the computer system only takes up one large room. Who would have thought that that same amount of information would now be available in a laptop?
I had a few minor gripes about the Inspiron 8100 but am glad to have access to one whenever I need to travel. Thanks, Boss, I will send you an e-mail greeting with the new laptop on National Boss Day. Any chance of a raise to go along with the new computer?
