Homosexuality, Religion, and Marriage Write-Off

Apr 28 '05 (Updated May 01 '05)

The Bottom Line Whatever.

Yes, I can't be bothered to write a review for months, but hey, I can mouth off about the gay marriage issue write-off. Yay, go me.

I've said it a million times before, and I'll say it again. Anyone who takes me seriously deserves what they get.

(Optional)

What are your spiritual beliefs or religious affiliations?

Is half-assed nihilism a religious affiliation?

What is your sexual orientation?

I have a lover, and I've spent almost more time with her naked than non-naked. And she's a chick. So, probably heterosexual. (Her name is Khendra, incidentally, and while we're in public, I'd like everyone to know that she's worthy.)

How do you see your own religious/spiritual views as influencing your opinion of sexuality?

I'm in favor of sexuality, and one reason for that is because a lot of religious people I loathe pretend to hate it. That close enough?

(Required)

How do you define marriage?

A worthless, expensive agreement that causes more pain than it ever ended. What's the divorce rate up to now? 70 percent? More?

My lover can't imagine getting married, and I couldn't be happier for that. Even if she somehow turned on me, I'd never want her to suffer all the bullshit the average divorcee goes through.

What thoughts or reactions do you have to these two pictures? (all completely safe for work, home, etc.)

They won't have children that would've grown up to be idiots anyway. How can I not approve?

How does one of Christian faith reconcile these two pictures? Is one “right” and one “wrong”?

What reactions do you have to seeing these signs?

A person of Christian faith could absolutely reconcile these two pictures.

Oh, sure, the first seems to contradict Christ's famous rhetoric about "loving thy neighbor" or "let he who is without sin cast the first stone", but he was also like "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26). Contradiction is a huge part of Christian tradition.

So if you're hating gay people in the guise of saving them, I just want you to know two things: a) Christ smiles on you, and b) stay the hell away from me. (Oh, and get rid of your crosses. Crosses are the LAST thing Christ's gonna want to see when he returns, you know.)

Why do you think the topic of homosexuality is so polarizing in religious communities?

Religious communities? Odd, I haven't noticed this stupid bickering among pagans. Oh, you mean extremist Christian and Muslim communities. Come on, these are people who think the world is gonna end even though science has revealed that this galaxy alone is full of BILLIONS of stars and worlds (what, did God put them in the sky just to shine on us before he snuffs everything out?). We can't expect proper focus or rational thought from them.

The best you're going to get is "OMIGOD, some man's about to say 'I do' while thinking about another man's penis! It's the end of the human race! Hey, wait, is that another genocide in Africa? Never mind that, get back to the penis!"

It'd be funnier if I were actually exaggerating.

Should the government be in the business of defining marriage? Why or why not?

Right now, my government is also, by its own admission, in the business of providing education and preventing ethnic cleansings. I'd rather see it do a proper job there first.

Would you support the legalization of gay marriage?

I can't even support heterosexual marriage, on the previously-stated grounds that it so often results in misery and bullshit. What did gay people ever do to me to deserve their own turn at that?

If that's what they WANT, though, then fine. But I don't wanna hear any stereotypical homosexual backsassing when I say "I told you so".

If you answered no, what are your fears behind its legalization? If you answered yes, what are your fears behind it remaining illegal?

I have no fear. Our society already has problems much worse than legalizing or denying gay marriage could possibly cause.

Would you support government-sanctioned civil unions between homosexual couples?

"Government-sanctioned civil unions"? Oh, wait, that's one of those euphemisms I don't care about. The term sounds like a half-assed version of marriage to me.

Do you see any way of bridging this current divide in our country over "wedge issues" like gay marriage or abortion? Or should we even be trying?

Simple. Make it a felony to teach ANY religion to a minor. Let them wait till they're grown up, so they can look for themselves and make their own decision, rather than being brainwashed into it for half a lifetime.

Religious extremists, of course, would scream bloody murder, but you have to expect that. If their beliefs had any good points, they wouldn't have to worry about their children making the "right" choice, would they?

What do you see America's view of homosexuality and gay marriage being in 100 years from today? What will those future Americans think of us in 2005, as they look back?

100 years? Whatever.

Technologically, we've advanced by orders of magnitude, but socially, we're still pretty much at the level we were in the late Stone Age, probably lower (sure, cavemen didn't have the Louvre or Mystery Science Theater 3000, but they didn't have Anne Coulter either). We've just become more complex about our aggression and stupidity. Rational thought is a learned skill, and I don't expect another 100 years to be enough for the masses in general to master it.

Final thoughts or ideas:

As someone who had the Holocaust shoved down his throat throughout high school, I was annoyed about later, largely unopposed ethnic cleansings like the ones in Cambodia, Rwanda, the Sudan, and other areas. Hey, cool, the Sudan one's still going on...

But for an accident of birth, this could be happening to me.

Only by holding the lowest imaginable opinion of the human race can I actually believe that there are morons who are protesting gay marriage when fucking genocide is still a reality. Seriously, if a meteor hits this planet and wipes out everything above the cockroach, it won't be a problem as much as a solution.
