Powerful Suction of a Vacuum (Reply to this comment)
by molly5880
Hi there,
I'm trying to purchase a vacuum and I am not sure what number to look for. I currently have a vacuum that has 1600W. I have no idea what this means but I do know that it doesn't not pick up anything off the floor. If I'm looking at watts... what's the minimum I should look for and if it's volts... what's the minimum I should look for?
thank you in advance!

When you worked as a custodian through college and have torn apart as many vacuums as I have, you have a tendency to learn a thing or two.
Thanks for the comment and I look forward to reading more of your coffee....i mean hockey reviews.

Well you're not going to like my answer. Because of how powerful the motor needs to be on a steam cleaner (since water is heavier than air), the unit has to be big a bulky to support the motor. You will not find Great results in any of the consumer models (They do work, just not as well as the $4000 professional model I used as a custodian).
I think your best bet is to get one of the "sharks" (that is what I think they're called) that will handle small spots well and still rely on the carpet company you can trust.
I do not know of any model that I can endorse at the moment that would meet your requirements.
sry,

Alan,
Who woulda think there was so much to vacuums these days. I just knew some sucked and some didn't (you can take that either way). Excellent and informative article.

Great review! (Reply to this comment)

Hmmm, I am about to invest in a steam cleaner for carpet/upholstery and can't decide on inexpensive or expensive. I just want easy to use. I am tired of paying a fortune to those professional cleaners even though I've been very pleased with the company I've used. I have a vulnerable back, so I want lightweight. I am not tech oriented, so want simple or no assembly. I don't suppose you would want to quickly do a review on this product? I'd love you forever. . .

Thanks for the different slant. I intended this to be a spring board for people that are intending to buy a vacuum and the more ideas they get the better. If you have reviewed the previously mentioned vacuums then feel free to post the links in another comment. I don't mind and if it helps other people make a good buying decision then we all win. (this offer is open to anyone else that has a vacuum reviewed that they absolutely love.)
But for the record, I love my Dyson and I still think it is the best consumer vacuum out there, but they are expensive.

Thanks for the compliment. Having been a custodian and deliberately playing with other people's vacuum's has taught me a lot. I just hope this guide helps people.

Excellent piece! I have a different (Reply to this comment)

slant on a couple of points. I tend to like a canister for the home because of the capability to vacuum curtains, cobwebs, general high dusting with a brush or crevice attachment and wood floors, which you referenced. For this I recommend an Electrolux. I know they are pricey but you can get a good Rennaisance model on Ebay for $300-$400.
As far as commercial vacs go, I like the Sanitaires which you can buy as a consumer for under $250.00. They will last a lifetime in the home.
I have never seen a Dyson that I liked, but that is a personal observation.
Your review is VH because it sums up the points to consider in logical detail. Nice job!
