Hi there, thank you for your review, I find it very informative. However I do have a few questions concerning about the area.
I'm never the follow-the-trail kind of hiker. I'm more interested in the more remote and rugged areas where there are no signs, no trails, and preferably no people. I know westkills has plenty of wilderness to offer, but since i've never been there before, i need some suggestions.
As of now, I'm thinking just follow one of the trails down a few miles then just turn and venture off into the woods, but i need some suggestions on how to reach those areas. (also where should i park my car, as im driving up from NYC, which trail to start off with..etc.)
the entire duration of my trip will be 2-3 days, I'm an army veteran, and i do have some experience surviving in the woods. here are the things i will pack with me.
- knife
- canteen (with water)
- compass
- flint
- 5-50 cords

Can you give me some pointers on what's the best way to tackle this one? thanks a bunch!
