The Bottom Line

What are your spiritual beliefs or religious affiliations?
Somewhere between atheist and agnostic

What is your sexual orientation?
Straight

How do you define marriage?
As two people sharing a life together

What thoughts or reactions do you have to these two pictures? (all completely safe for work, home, etc.)

Amazingly, I have none. I feel like I should, since it’s important enough to be included here, but I really have nothing to say about either.

How does one of Christian faith reconcile these two pictures? Is one “right” and one “wrong”? What reactions do you have to seeing these signs?

In the first one, I think that the two guys need to get a life. The guy on the left seems too complacent about it. Is that a cup of coffee he’s holding? As for both of them, I have to agree with freedom of speech no matter how pathetic, mean or little it makes you look. I think it was Mark Twain that said that it’s better to keep quiet and let people think you’re a fool rather than speak and remove all doubt.

In the second one, I’m inclined to make the “get a life” comment again, but to a lesser degree. Someone once said that the only thing required for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Why should the guys in the first picture have all the fun?

Why do you think the topic of homosexuality is so polarizing in religious communities?

Why not? I think that something has to be polarizing.

Should the government be in the business of defining marriage? Why or why not?

No. Marriage means many things to many people. I don’t think that there should be one standard and I especially don’t think that the government should be imposing one. The only role that I think that the government should play in marriage is strictly one of keeping records.

Would you support the legalization of gay marriage?

I don’t think that gay marriage should be illegal just because a few narrow-minded people can’t wrap their brain around it.

If you answered no, what are your fears behind its legalization? If you answered yes, what are your fears behind it remaining illegal?

It’s not so much a fear of it remaining illegal. I think I summed it up in the previous response. I don’t think that a group of people should be arbitrarily denied the right to marry simply because someone doesn’t like it. I abhor broccoli. You don’t see me lobbying for a constitutional amendment banning broccoli. Do you?

Would you support government-sanctioned civil unions between homosexual couples?

I really see civil unions as a shallow attempt to compromise. Why not have marriage for all and simply call it that?

Do you see any way of bridging this current divide in our country over "wedge issues" like gay marriage or abortion? Or should we even be trying?

I think that there are too many people that are entrenched in one view or another that we’ll never get everyone to agree on everything, nor do I think we should try. In my review of “Fahrenheit 9/11”, I mentioned that people who hate Bush will hold the movie up as an example of why they hate him and those that support him will hold him up as an example of Liberal bias. I don’t think many people changed their views on Bush because of the movie. Any similar attempt to get people to agree will probably be met with similar success.

What do you see America's view of homosexuality and gay marriage being in 100 years from today? What will those future Americans think of us in 2005, as they look back?

I think that homosexuality and gay marriage will be one of those things that people will look back on and wonder what we were thinking. It’s almost like segregation or women’s rights. Looking back, there are still some people that would agree with it and wish it was still that way, but the vast majority of the people out there agree that we’ve made progress.

Final thoughts or ideas:

Not as of yet.
