Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
Here is a film that was so eagerly awaited by me that as soon as the DVD hit the shelves, I was there, buying one for myself. My hubby was not so enthusiastic and greeted my purchase with the words "it looks like a load of rubbish". Well not exactly those words, but words to that effect!
And so we sat down to watch what we thought was going to be a movie that was scaring and thrilling .....
***Synopsis***
Set in New York, we are first greeted with a young couple (Rob and Beth) the morning after the night before. Very happy and seeming very much in love, this couple talk about going to Coney Island for the day.
Then later on at a party Beth turns up with another man and Rob gets a bit of a strop on. Beth and her date leave the part. Rob is very much in love with Beth but does not seem to have the courage to tell her this. The party is for Rob as he is going to Japan and his brother Jason is behind the camera.
Suddenly the ground shakes and loud roars are heard. A shot shows the head of the statue of liberty being thrown to the ground.
The whole area panics and people start to leave the city. Rob and Jason are trying to leave the city in the company of Hudson and Lily. Shortyly after they meet up with Marlena, who starts talking about it "eating people".
What is it? Why is it eating people?
The Brooklyn Bridge is destroyed, and Jason dies. Rob goes to a shop to get a working battery for his mobile phone and gets a message from Beth asking for help as she is trapped in her apartment. The four decide to go back and get Beth. They get caught in a firefight between the army and the creature, but what is it?
They manage to get to the underground station where they decide to walk through the tunnels to get to Beth's home. They are ambushed by spider-like creatures and Marlena is badly bitten.
They manage to get to a shopping centre where soldiers take care of them. Marlena is suddenly separated as the medical team discover she has been bitten.
Hud, Rob and Lily are shown out by an army sergeant who advises them that if they rescue their friend, they must be at the pick up point by 6 am the next morning as that is when the last helicopter will leave. Otherwise they would be left trapped in the city as the government had decided to destroy the city in order to destroy this creature.
Then follows a struggle to get to Beth, rescue her and get out of the city. Do they manage to get to her? Is she still alive? Do they all make it out alive? Sorry, not telling.
***My Opinion***
I was so hyped up to watch this film, I felt very let down by it. It is shot entirely with a video camera, similar to the Blair Witch Project. unfortunately it does not even have half of the suspense factor.
I felt that the actors (none of whom I knew) were very wooden and not at all convincing. The only convincing acting in the film came from the corpses! That is just how bad I felt this film was.
The special effects are absolutely great however. The creature, whatever it is supposed to be, did look scary. What let the film down is a lack of storyline, wooden acting and a terrible script. The film is supposed to be a tape held by the US government which documents the incident in New York.
To be totally honest, Blair Witch was much more scary and that had no special effects. This film reminds me of a cross between Blair Witch and Godzilla, but without being remotely entertaining.
In all honesty, I feel that I really cannot recommend this to anyone. It is not scary, it's a terrible story and it lacks any suspense at all. I could pretty much guess what was going to happen in the film before it actually happened.
I think I must be getting cynical in my old age as this is not a film that I would want to watch again. It only gets one star from me and that is because you cannot give less than that! If I could give this film a zero I certainly would.
My advice is to bypass this and watch something else. Thanks for reading. Di xx
