Saves time? Yes! I didn't start doing laundry until college and the one thing my mother drummed into my head was to separate and keep similar colors together.
I followed the advice to the letter of the law and all these years have painstakingly gathered like colors and washed separate loads. This approach sometimes resulted in more loads than I needed which was inefficient and time consuming.
And then again there were the occasional problems. My 15 year old son wears a lot of red (Red Sox fan) and also wears a white tee underneath. Sometimes he throws them in the laundry together with the white tee hidden under the red tee. He's color blind, so the resulting pink tee just looks grey to him. It drives me crazy(ier).
My mother recommended these Color Catchers to me long ago. As I often do, I kept yessing that I'd buy them, really thinking this wasn't an item I needed. Every time my parents stopped by, she'd check out my laundry room until she finally brought over a package.
Hey they were FREE, so I gave it a shot. I was shocked at the amount of color these sheets absorbed! At first, I continued my usual routine, and oh so carefully picked out similar colors using the Shout Color Catchers too. Never failed, even items which had been washed again and again still discolored the Color Catchers.
Feeling confident with the boost from Shout Color Catchers, I got crazy and started to combine things I never would have dreamed to combine. I'm even washing light pinks and reds together. The results? Great! Dyes that would deposited on the clothes are deposited on the Color Catcher and there's proof. I now use color catchers with every color load, and have gained the following:
No guesswork
Reduced number of loads
Reduced water usage
Reduced complaints from my son and daughter who are looking for that item I haven't yet washed because I'm waiting for a bigger load (my poor husband does his own laundry)
Less stress from sorting only to realize I missed that one hot pink top my daughter wants to wear tomorrow.
They really do work --- that dye which accumulates on the color catching was going somewhere! I think they are more of a convenience than a necessity. However, I am never without a supply.
More proof? When my sister and I stay at the beach with the kids, and there are clothes strewn about as we're packing up, I can identify which clothes are ours simply by looking at the condition of the clothes. She spends a fortune, but some of the stuff looks pretty dingy. There is one Gap tee my 6 year old niece wears all the time. At one time it was cute and white, now it's drab and grey. Apparently my mother hasn't noticed.
I've introduced my son and daughter to the washing machine (although on both counts, the relationship needs some attention)and I feel more confident there will be fewer color disasters when they actually DO a load of laundry.
High school graduates beginning college? Definitely an item to include with your packing list.
I buy mine online at drugstore.com @ $3.99 for 24 sheets and think it's well worth the price. Think of it as an insurance policy for your laundry.
I should listen to my mother more often...
