Tales Retold W/O

The Bottom Line The Bottom Line thinks the theatre rocks.

I love tales. Tales get retold, changing with each telling, and morph into something more, with different connotations. They reflect the ideas and thoughts of those that retell them. The classic tales surrounding the Arthurian legends have been retold time and again, yet I love reading these new adaptations. I also have a love for going to see multiple productions of the same play. It's the same concept: What has the new story teller decided to do with the tale that I know so well?

In the spirit of this I challenge you, all of you, to review a retold tale. Review Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet script then review a movie adaptation or West Side Story. What's been taken out, what's been added. If you're reviewing a script and a performance how does the performance change your views of what you read? What choices have been made that make the retelling different from the original? How do you feel about these changes?

With movie adaptations of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Sin City in theaters right now there's already been a fair bit of discussion of retelling lately. Even so there are tons of pieces of retelling stored in the media of comics, books, tv shows, music, and movies. Be it the fact that there are roughly twenty-nine different versions of Othello on film or that there's only one review of the The Princess Bride screenplay here on epinions there is plenty of room to add some new material and entertain me in the process (because that should be your goal anyway). Heck, I'd love to see reviews of the various versions of When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki, or even songs which aren't originally by Prince.

As for my entries in this little write-off: I chose to follow Pygmalion from script, to movie, to musical script, and finally to musical movie.
Pygmalion the play, the original play script
Pygmalion the movie, the movie adapted from the play
My Fair Lady the script, the musical script adapted from Pygmalion
My Fair Lady the movie, the movie adaptation of the musical

Each version is really the same story, but has different amounts of appeal. Honestly I think the original Pygmalion script and the movie of My Fair Lady are the best, but the others have their merits and show the progression of the tale. The point of Epinions is to show what's good and what's bad; lets go and show everybody which versions of a tale are the best, and why.
