The Dreamcast Is The Poor Man's Playstation 2

Written: Oct 16 '01
Pros:Inexpensive, Many Titles To Buy, Internet Access
Cons:Can't Play DVD movies
The Bottom Line: Save some money and buy a Dreamcast instead of a PS2.

Upset that the PS2 rush has just about wiped out your local video game and department stores supply of them? Have you found PS2's and aren't willing to drop the $300 plus for one? Want an inexpensive alternative to the PS2? Well, the Sega Dreamcast is the system for you. With over 100 game titles to choose from, you won't be at a lost. The Dreamcast's specs include a main memory of 16MByte (64Mbit SD-RAM x 2), game controllers that feature Analog and digital directional control, 4 buttons and 2 analog triggers, a 56Kbps modem, four controller ports standard, a customized operating system using Windows CE as its base (supports Direct X) supported by Microsoft Visual Studio development System Version 5.0 and refined Visual C++, and for those of you who don't know what that means, AWSOME 3D GRAPHISC!!!!!

The Dreamcast is cool because the memory card, called a VMU (Visual Memory Unit), looks like a small hand held game, where you can save a considerably good amount of game memory on to it, about 200 blocks. With the LCD screen on the VMU, you can also play mini games on it that can build up attributes on the games you have saved on to the VMU. You can build up powers and other things, depending on the game. There is even a litte virtual pet on the VMU that you can care for. Hint: if you have a male on one VMU and a female on another VMU, they can "mate".

With no question, the Dreamcast is your best bet for a PS2 substitute. Fast 3D graphics, internet access (where you can even play some of your games on line with other people with the same title), tons of titles to buy including racing, traditional sports, and action adventure games (like Resident Evil: Code Veronica), for a low price, you can't help but buy one. They are usually $80 for just the system, one conotroller, av cables, demo disk, and web browser. For $20 more, you can get what is called the sports pack, which includes the above items plus NFL 2K1, NBA 2K1, and World Series (baseball) 2K1. Both packages are available from your local Funcoland, Babbages, or Software Etc stores or online @ www.gamestop.com.

So you want the chaper alternative? So you want something different? The Dreamcast is the one for you.
