The Bottom Line If you are just getting into the DJ business, this makes for an excellent investment and practice mixer.
Common sense says you won't get much of a mixer for under $100.00, but this two-channel stereo mixer is a bona fide bargain. The Pyramid PM3601 Compact Professional DJ Mixer is a tough, 4 input system, that can handles two Phono; or two other pieces of equipment like a Tape or CD player. Since I only DJ with two CD players this is an excellent inexpensive investment for me. The tough black finish, and easily repeatable crossfader means this is no toy. Although I prefer using a four-band equalizer, this easy to use mixer is great for small events.
Entertaining an audience with a microphone sounds great in theory, but the reality has yet to match up. Fortunately the Pyramid PM3601 has a 6.35mm microphone input jack. Once plugged in, you can use talkover and converse with the crowd with or without the music going. The line input could be used at the same time the mic input is being used. Don't worry; the Pyramid PM3601 takes a lot of the worry out crossover noises since you can silence the music or your voice with the mute function that works for each channel.
The decorative LED display is clearly visible and easy to use especially if you are monitoring the music with your headphones. The stereo metering provides bright, clear visibility of input levels. Matched with the Pyramid's fine-textured black and blue finish with white and yellow graphics with the numbering for the controls making it a serious looking and attractive piece of equipment. The LED display looks serious enough for any passer by that's perusing your equipment. I like the Pyramid's flashiness, especially the bold PM3601 writing over the cross fader lever at the bottom of the system. The control dials are vertically lined right on top of each other so there is no need to search around for the bass, treble, and master control dials.
The Pyramid can be secured and installed into a case or carried separately. No need to worry about this unit being a space hog since the dimensions are (W x D x H): 10" x 7.5" x 2". The efficient dimensions are a perfect fit for the standard DJ deckstand. It is designed for home studio use where space is limited and it is rugged enough to handle live sound applications.
The Pyramid PM3601 is an inexpensive workhorse playing for hours with no problem. It's never gotten too hot, plus I've got a miniature fan facing the back of the unit as a back-up cooling system. The controllable level amp output feature and the 15v transformer that is included makes this unit great for hooking it up with other systems.
The mixer is a key piece of DJ equipment as long it smoothly fades from one program source to another then you are fine. The sound of the Pyramid is comparable to any two-channel mixer, as this equipment holds its own when hooked up to my Bob Mackie Speakers. It works well fading music with good precision; you can easily add one dance song to another without losing energy or sound performance. Remember this is a stand-alone simple mixer; you can't just plug it in and expect to get sound. During use, the sound quality was clean and quiet. The Pyramid PM3601 has to be hooked up, and of course you'll have to purchase your own mic and headphone.
The Pyramid PM3601 does not take a lot of technical savvy to hook-up and use since all the jack locations are appropriately marked. If you are just getting into the DJ business, this makes for an excellent investment and practice mixer. This might not be the world's favorite mixer, but it can hold its own and won't let you down. Time to break open the piggybank, kids. Pyramid PM3601 Compact Professional DJ Mixer, $49.99. At this price, the Pyramid is a real steal. It has everything a novice Disc Jockey could wish for ...very impressive sound quality, a professional realistic appearance and it is user-friendly enough to get the job done. Remember this is a starter mixer, and as mixing styles continue to evolve, so will performance mixers. Professional DJ's that have been in the industry for a while, will probably want to climb up a notch or two on the food chain to a 3 channel mixers.
