Mike sweetie, thank you so much for your kind words.
You know, if there wasn't at least a few unusual tracks I wouldn't believe Brian made the mix. Xiu Xiu definitely scares me, it was quite traumatic in fact. I absolutely want to make a few purchases based on this mix, especially some of those female songer-songwriters who can play 6-gazillion instruments and are also gorgeous. I really should hate them all just on principle.
As for Rainer Maria, since the guy isn't singing on the newest release, I'd certainly be willing to give them another chance. His vocals were what spoiled it for me, I think.
Please come out of your hole permanently, the hamsters will find you more easily if you stay in it. (As a reward for doing so, I'll even let you click one of those 5 rate buttons on my review page!)
Thanks hon,
Caroline (who will be smiling all day now because Mike called her "darling.")

Familiarity is the devil (Reply to this comment)

Caroline,
Ace review, darling--especially enjoyable for me, I'm sure, given that (duh) I know all these songs!
Glad you got something out of the ones I didn't too--I trust Brian enough to know he's got good taste, just a little different than mine. Thus far this disc has roped me into purchases from The Dresden Dolls and Jesus Jones, and I haven't been let down yet. It really is a great disc, though I still question the idea of putting Xiu Xiu on the "pop" side of what he gave me. But then, for me, Xiu Xiu anywhere is better than no Xiu Xiu at all. So there's that. I like that crazy stuff, even if they scare the hell out of me.
One of these days, too, I'll listen to another Rainer Maria song, just so I can stop thinking they suck based on my opinion of the one song. Because a lot of people seem to like them.
Anyway, I'll go back into my hole now, but just wanted to come out and say how much I enjoyed this mix review. Nice work.

Hi again Tom,
Right! I'll begin copying right away then. Just a forewarning for you though- it has singing Daleks in it!
Oh my, that sounds a little frightening.
Oh you must come! It won't be the same without you. Most of the other guests are virtually total strangers to me.
I'm trying very hard to work out the funds to make it possible, I really want to meet you, Dave and Chris. Plus, being back home would be a thrill for me.
Me too- can't wait till they add the DVD box set to Epinions for me to review.
You have it on DVD already over there? I'm very jealous!
You'll love that episode- its my favourite one.... very harrowing and serious though!
Our VCR expired a painful death the other day, so I'm unable to watch it for the time being.. and even worse, I can't tape this week's episode or any others until we buy a new one. Good thing VCR's are very cheap now.

Sue,
You are not, your reviews are terrific.
Sorry mum, I'll try to be a good girl from now on. (Please overlook the fact that next weekend I'm running off to a strange city to see strange people and get rip roaring drunk. I'll try to stay clothed.)
I know of her! I actually own a CD by her! I feel so hip now.
Oh no, Sue is hip. Surely that's a sign of the apocalypse.
So, you're saying this is a weird thing? I say this all the time.
I think you just proved my point...
It isn't easy living in a house filled with balloons and hamsters. Though I don't much mind looking like an idiot (all the better to embarrass the children, my lifelong goal. Mwahahahahaha.....;)
Oh absolutely, it's so much fun and helps pay them back for all those poopy diapers.
It's always lovely to see you!

IBYT,
Now Jesus Jones took me way back.. I kind of used to like them in a sort of "Well I kind of like them" sort of way. And after reading your piece, i couldn't get one song in particular of theirs out of my noggin.
Come on then, sing it for us.
As for Xiu Xiu, hmmmm.. Ok, I see your point, but don't you think that would make an excellent DW name? Coz I do. But I'm weird.
Well yes, you are very weird, we all know that. It would make a great DW name, although I thought you favoured Gan Ning and his feathers. (You have a thing for feathers don't you.)
Nicely written up.. there are a few on here I haven't heard.. maybe I'll check out the favoured ones at some point.
Thank you, say the word if you'd like any samples.
But first, I have to see where I can by me one of those coin operated boys.. they'd make life so much easier.
They would... but they also don't catch fish.

Ha! Brian, when I saw your comment title my first thought was, it's a good thing the song wasn't about beavers. Yes, I have a sick mind.
Anyway, now that I've destroyed my credibility... I really enjoy research (I know I'm strange) and attempt to learn at least a little about my subjects. There must be something redeeming about Xiu Xiu because you like them, but I'm mystified what that is. Based on what you say below, I won't give up on Rainer Maria just yet.
The majority of songs are very successful for me, I could quite happily spend the next 20 years exploring your music collection, it's so varied and interesting. You've certainly added to my "want to buy" list many times though, so that would be a very dangerous pasttime for me.
Thanks again!

Hi Patricia,
There's a lot of good stuff here, so I hope you enjoy anything you decide to look up. I can totally understand about Coin-Operated Boy; it's very creative and innovative but would probably get old fast.
Thanks for the visit!

open your hamster to me, darling (Reply to this comment)

Ha! I love your quest to become well-informed about the bands i send you, sometimes more informed than i am; e.g., there's no way i would've noticed Xiu Xiu's copyright notice on their own. (And no, given your take on "Don Diasco", i'm pretty sure you'd best avoid their entire catalog.)
I'm happy such a high percentage of these tracks worked for you, including most of the few Mike didn't like. "The Contents of Lincoln's Pockets" is honestly one of my favorites from this mix, and that's the one you both _hated_, but it might interest you that their latest and best album, Long Knives Drawn, completely got rid of the guy's vocals. I think you'd find the gal's voice, out front, to not only be pretty but interesting.
That said, yay on you being a Dan Bern fan, and the first purchases i'd recommend from the disc, given your ratings, would be Emm Gryner and Jesus Jones; Public and Already would be my first-choice starting points, but both artists are consistently good, and Jesus Jones _really_ got underestimated by history. Although if "Right Here, Right Now" had been their only song ever, i'd still be a fan... Laurie and Ani also warrant plenty of exploration; suggested beginnings, Life on a String and Little Plastic Castle.
Very nice descriptions all the way around. Thanks for choosing such a me-centric way to practice your music reviews!
cheers,
- Brian

VN review. The only one of those songs I am familiar with is Coin Operated Boy. I recorded it for my niece and we listened to it a while and got a good laugh singing along with it. It's a fun song. But now we are tired of it (it got old quickly).
I'll have to listen to some of these others on here as they sound really good.

Tape exchange (Reply to this comment)

I think tape exchanges at meets are a great idea. For the coming London meet I could give you a tape too.
I have a Doctor Who audio adventure called "Jubilee" featuring Colin Baker as the Doctor as well as the Daleks. It's 120 minutes and written by the same guy who wrote the Dalek episode of the new series, so there's lots of similarities between them.
I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece, but its fairly entertaining- so I could copy it to tape if you wanted.

Hey Liz,
I just looked and no, it's not the same one, which is good. That will give me another chance to appreciate a group liked by two people I respect. It's actually quite interesting, out of all the mixes I've received, I don't think anything has been duplicated so far.
This mix was a pleasant surprise, I only expected one from our Brian. I wish I could make them in return, I feel quite guilty about that.
I'm doing them in the order I received them but the review of yours is coming, I promise!
Saturday's coming soon, you better be there!

Hi Jacki,
Of course you're a j-pop expert! That song is definitely catchy and I like it a lot. I think I found the translation for that one on line while I was researching the mix. At least, I think it was that one... or the other one.
Thanks for stopping by!

anyway, the only song i've heard on this mix is 'owari nai yume', & it's a song i never get tired of. it's just so happy & catchy.. ah, the epitome of j-pop. i could hook you up with a translation sometime if you want to know what the song's actually saying.
