The Bottom Line This is a great tuning exercise for anyone who enjoys writing.
As an ex-English teacher, I have spend many a wonderful afternoon with my students doing "found poetry" assignments. One of my favorite exercises was to give each student a newspaper article in full. They would 1) have to cross-out words the didn't want to use then 2) decorate and connect the remaining words to form what took the appearance of a scaffold of poetry. Good stuff, indeed! In any event, I've chosen to use the contents pages from a tome of modern-day poetry entitled Verses That Hurt. The chosen titles: - Manifesto - Consider the Discourse - Sweet Obsession - in tha a.m. - trippin - You Will - Break - Us - Hello all you dialectical - My Barber's Breath - I'm in it for the money and the sex - Whose Music - Hardcore - Sleepover - Trojan Love Poems - Cyberslut - How Much Longer? - Because of You - Laughter of Gold - Hate Me - No More Birthdays - Yet Another Drug Poem - Third Eye in the Forehead - Black Hole - God don't tell us what to do The poem: Hello all you dialectical fools. Consider the Discourse of this Manifesto while I'm trippin over you, my Sweet Obsession after another Hardcore Sleepover. How Much Longer? You tell me I'm in it for the money and the sex but You Will Break Us and I'll be sitting around penning Yet Another Drug Poem Because of You. Whose Music is that while I'm being assaulted by My Barber's Breath, thinking up Trojan Love Poems to send to some Cyberslut deep in tha a.m. The music rings in my head like Laughter of Gold but I'm not smiling. You make me Hate Me and wish for No More Birthdays, except the gift of a Third Eye in the Middle of the Forehead, a Black Hole so dark that even God don't tell us what to do in there. Most, if not all of the poems in this W/O are posted in the Humor Poetry category. The book I used was decidedly NOT a happy book!
