Written: Oct 17 '01 (Updated Jun 13 '02)
Pros:Good games, good price, what else could you ask for.
Cons:It's dying
The Bottom Line: Dying system, but for $50 your getting a deal

Sega Dreamcast is it Truly Dead?

Sega released the dreamcast a couple years back, it is a good system, but for some reason it has been crushed by Sony’s Playstation 2. Is it because the PS2 has a DVD player I could not tell you. This was my first Sega system, I have always been a Nintendo fanatic, and it will also be my last Sega system. It won’t be my last because I hold some deep grudge against Sega, oh no, it is because Sega is leaving the Console business and focusing on making games for other consoles. You will be seeing Sega hits like Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, and Sega Sports like NFL2K2.

Now I want you to understand something there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Dreamcast, maybe Sega just didn’t promote it enough, I don’t remember seeing very many commercials if any for it’s games or the system. The dreamcast is considered DEAD by many gamers. Some point to the online aspect saying that Sega tried to promote online console gaming too soon.

Price:A+

You can get a brand new dreamcast for like $80 that’s $20 lower than the old Playstation. Unfortunately Sega has stopped shipping systems to the country so once the stores are depleted of their supplies there are no more new systems. NO MORE NEW SYSTEMS, that’s not so bad though because many people will be unloading there Dreamcast for cash so they can buy the newer consoles(PS2, Xbox, Gamecube). This means you can get a refurbished system, which is basically a brand new system or a used system for even less cash. Also a lot of Sega’s best games are being sold for great prices. You can get all the classics like NFL2K1, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, and several others for the very low price of (drum roll please) $19.99. I couldn’t believe my eyes the other day I saw Shenmue a great rpg for only $16.

And you can even get games for the price of one verily large blank CD. How you ask, well some super geniuses have found a way to burn a Dreamcast game. See Sega looking to save some money used GDRom’s instead of actual CD’s, and people now have figured out how to burn them. You don’t burn these like a normal CD, first you have to download the game file from the internet (must have at least a DSL or it will take WAY too long, like 40 hours on a 56) then you will have to do some manipulating and then burn it to a CD. This only works for older games and you have to find a place that you can get the games from and you need the correct software in order to do it. Check out this site if you want to know how to burn DC games: http://www.neutr0n.com/dc/. Don’t ask me how to burn DC games I don’t have a fast enough connection in order to do it you will have to go to the website or figure it out for yourself.

Games: B

Sega has many games for the DC and a lot of them go for good prices, why the B then? Well Sega is going to stop making games for the DC in late 2001 or early 2002. Many companies have already stopped making games for the DC and are focusing on the new systems coming out (Gamecube and Xbox).

DC does have a lot of quality games out there and I would definitely recommend the system to a mother/father with young children. You won’t have to shell out a lot of cash and it has a lot of good games for young children Sonic Adventure 1or 2, any of the Sports games, racing games, and I’m sure many more. I don’t really keep in touch with the games that will be good for young children.

You can now find a lot of good games for dreamcast for $9.99. These arent really bad games, no some of the games selling for $9.99 are among the top games for the system.

Features: A-

Sega was the first system to allow multiplayer play through the use of an internet connection. This was truly an innovative idea. The DC has a 56k internet modem installed inside of it. DC also has 128 bit 3d processing allowing for some great looking graphics, 16mb of memory for some very large worlds, four controller spaces for fun and entertaining multiplayer games, and 64 voice CD quality audio. Later additions of the DC also can play music CD’s.

So Should I Buy it or What: D
To tell you the truth I really don’t know. I wouldn’t buy it again but you need to make a decision based on what I have told you and maybe other things that you have heard on the system. I wouldn’t recommend this system to anyone other then people looking for a cheap system for some cheap thrills. This system may not be dead yet, but in a few months it will be.

Update

Ok so the dreamcast is pretty much dead now. I believe it was said that dreamcasts are no longer going to be shipped into the country so for the price they have been going for lately, I have seen them for $50, I would recommend picking one of these up. 50 thats cheaper than a GBA, sure you cant carry it around with you, and no there arent any new games coming out on the system but there are so many good games out there already many having been or are in the process of being ported to other systems. Ported just means brought to other systems in case you didnt know. So if they are bothering to take games from this system and bring them to others than you know it has good games. For the low, low price tag of $50 and quality games for dirt cheap prices, even saw some pretty good titles for 4.99, thats cheaper than a game rental at blockbuster. I have no choice but to recommend this system even if there aren't any games being made for it anymore.
