I have a BILLION suggestions that would tickle your tastebuds. Why don't you knock off early one afternoon and join me for a chilly brewski (I'll buy).

I'd suggest either the Gingerman (if you're around the Rice area), Flying Saucer (if you're downtown), or Richmond Arms (on the strip).

Mark,

Your knowledge of beer just amazes me (along with Bryan_Carey). Nice to have a local person know so much about beer. I've always detested the taste of beer, but I think I need to expand my horizons beyond Miller, Bud and Corona to find out what really beer tastes like.

Any recommendations for something that is sweet and not too bitter of an aftertaste that is readily available in Houston?

Fortunately, I can't get my hands on any of the fermented Maltas of the world in my little corner of it. I'll stock up on Goya and throw some yeast in it. Fun may ensue.

In the U.S., there are indeed unfermented beverages like Goya Malta that bear only a passing resemblance to beer.

In South America, malta is fermented, though it tastes more like it underwent an arrested fermentation with copious quantities of unfermented (but more likely unfermentable) sugars. The dark Cusquena sold in the U.S. *IS* the malt that's sold in South America, so you can try it yourself...I think the difference between this and a Goya Malta will be painfully obvious.

I could fill in any number of words to complete that sentiment, but I'll refrain.

Are the Malta "beers" even alcoholic? I was under the impression you were more or less drinking unfermented (or at best, under-fermented) wort/beer, as in Goya Malta on these shores.

They don't manufacture much in this South American country, but this beer sounds like one of the country's prized possessions. I can't believe I haven't already heard of the name.
