Star Wars Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice By Karen Traviss.
This novel explores the disintegration of the Skywalker/Solo Clans as Jacen Solo falls further and further under the power of the Dark Side. Seduced by Lumiya, Dark Lady of the Sith, Jacen Solo has embraced the thought of becoming Sith, and using that power to bring Justice and Peace to the Galaxy. He just has to make the sacrifice that will seal his fate, and confirm him a Sith Lord. He has worried it might by Tenal Ka, the queen of the Hapes cluster, or his daughter by her, Allana. But events lead him to believe it might instead be his cousin, Ben Skywalker.
Ben is involved in his own dark deeds, as Jacen sends him on missions for the GAG, (the Galactic Secret Police) including a political assassination that helps Jacen seize power in the Senate, displacing Omas, the head of the Galactic Alliance, and forming a Sith like sharing of ‘temporary’ power with Naithal, the Mon Calimari Admiral of the Fleet.
Ben discovers a Sith artifact; a red sphere that is a sentient space ship with remarkable powers. It becomes, as the story progresses, a major character. He turns it in to Jacen, who in turn gives it over to Lumiya.
Mara Jade Skywalker, concerned for her son, begins looking at the situation, and decides Lumiya must be taken out for Ben’s sake, and if there is to be any hope of saving Jacen. She sets out to hunt her down, as only the former Hand of Palpatine could.
And Lumiya is playing them all, manipulating all of them to bring about the one thing she desires, Jacen Solo’s rebirth as a Dark Lord of the Sith.
Also woven through this book is the storyline between Mirta Gev and her grandfather, Boba Fett, as she tries to understand the man she was taught to hate. Fett is the Manda’lor, leader of all Mandalorians. He is also terminally ill, a legacy of the Kaminoan cloning, perhaps. Now, he is faced with getting Mandalor back on its feet, feared in the galaxy again, and choosing a successor, all with a granddaughter that he does not know how to love, and who might want to kill him.
Also in this storyline is Goran Beviin, Fett’s choice to succeed him as Manda’lor, and Goran’s husband, Medrit Vasar, a smith. Together these men are Fett’s biggest supporters, and the first confirmed homosexuals in the Star Wars universe. And it is their discovery of a huge deposit of beskar the Mandalorian steel stolen by the Vong. The hardest iron in the universe, it is the heart of the Mandalorian Armour, which is the heart of the Mandalorian culture. Now imagine a star fighter made of this stuff…..
There are a lot of threads in this book, a great number of sub plots to follow, but Traviss handles them with deft skill. Notable by their absence from the spot light in this book are the solos, Han, Leia and Jaina; mostly they are calls from distant worlds. Luke’s part, while vital, is also almost a cameo. The real action is between Jacen and Ben, and between Lumiya and Mara.
Now, having told you that Jacen is wondering who it is that he loves and will have to kill, and that Boba Fett is terminally ill, I will tell you that someone…a major character…dies.
I will also tell you that a minor character long forgotten may be on their way back in.
Karen Traviss has a way with a twist that would do M. Night Shyamalan proud. The writing style is easy to read, with good flow. The jumping around from plot thread to plot thread however is a little off-putting, and I did get a little bogged down when my life got busy, and the ability to devote more than 15 minutes at a time went out the window. In a pick-it-up, put-it-down reading style, these storylines can leave you hanging, and having to reread passages to figure out what is going on.
But that is my only criticism. All in all, I found this to be a very satisfying read. And now I leave you with two words: Darth Caedus.
