| pablothegreat's Full Review: Diane Degroat - Mother, You're the Best! but Siste... |
My daughter wishes for a baby brother or sister so badly! For the past couple of birthdays and Christmases, it was on the top of her wish list 'Baby Brother or Sister'. No amount of telling her that kids who have baby siblings usually are irritated by them will ease her sadness at not having a baby sister! It seems all of her peers have little brothers and sisters while she does not!
In this book, Gilbert is seen in class making a card to give to his mother on Mother's Day. As the children discuss what gifts they are giving to their mother, Gilbert tries to come up with a great gift too. The morning of Mother's Day, he decided to make his mother breakfast in bed. Things don't go well when the cereal is spilled and the toast is burned but things get worse as he carries the tray and spills juice on the special Mother's Day card! After all of this hard work, his sister has gotten to his mother first and gave her a card with scribbles on it. He then goes to count his money so he can buy her a gift but as he comes back his little sister is again giving his mother something while sitting in her lap--a bunch of wilted dandelions.
Gilbert asks his sister to go to the store with him which he never had before as he was a little jealous about her sitting in their mother's lap. They decide on ice cream at the store but it melts all over his sister on the way home. He doesn't want his mother to see the mess so cleans her up himself. Then his mother tries to nap but his sister wants to sit in her lap again...so Gilbert tells her to sleep in her bed and he will read stories..which he never did before! Once she falls asleep, his mother shows him pictures of when he was little like his sister. We see scrapbook pages of Gilbert as a toddler. She then thanks him for helping with his sister all day and says it was a wonderful gift to her! The family goes out that evening for a special dinner together.
The illustrations are really lovely of a loving family even with sibling rivalry going on. I didn't like the animals wearing clothes in this particular story as they looked strange to me, especially hairy-faced Gilbert! There are two to eight lines of text on each page of this 29 page book. A couple of pages are full page illustrations wit no text. There are a few more difficult words in it but most are easy reader type. I would recommend for ages 4 and up. Of course my daughter awwed at the little sister and wishes she had a little baby sister! I did find the kids in the story going to the store alone not a good idea--no adult is shown going with them. Overall it is a sweet tale of Mother's Day with a little sibling rivalry thrown in for good measure!
