The Bottom Line ABC....easy as 231
This is a Write-Off I thought of last night. In alphabetical order give me the first movie that comes to mind, preferably one you’ve seen and comment on it briefly, this is not a best of or worst of list, just a quick thinking list. Enjoy! Arachnophobia - Cheesy yet fun, with Jeff Daniels as a spider expert sent to a small town to investigate mysterious deaths later discovered to be the result of a poisonous spider transported from the rainforrest. Very average effects, but nutty and enjoyable to watch. Big Fish - A surprisingly good Tim Burton movie with a spectacular performance by Albert Finney as a dying man retelling the story of his life in supernatural form, trying to bond with his non-believing son Billy Crudop tin a way he sees life as one great story, even if it is a bit overblown. Great role for Ewan McGregor as the young Finney sharing his adventures in life. Candyman - This movie terrified me when it came out, the act of saying candyman in the mirror resulting in the appearance of the hook for a hand killer caused me to look away from my mirror for a while, with the bodaciously sexy Virginia Madsen showing her tatas, worth the price of admission alone Die Hard - Bruce Willis' landmark role, the action movie for the ages, set atop an L.A. skyscraper as Willis' character, Lt. John MacLane battles Arian Terrorists to an explosive conclusion, edge of your seat action and dark humor accentuate this not to be missed classic. English Patient - Girls, if you want to torture your boyfriend or husband force him to see this movie, a 3 hour snoozefest for guys and I am not sure even you ladies found it enjoyable, Ralph Fiennes carrying his one true love through the Sahara desert, blah blah, I am all for love stories but this one breaks the mold, gimme a romantic comedy any day of the week over this pile of poop. Forrest Gump - Stupid is as stupid does, one of the most enjoyable American fables seen through the eyes of a mentally inadequate man, beautifully shot and acted with a unique storyline, this is one of my all time favorites, Oscar winner for Best Picture and Tom Hanks as best actor. Grumpy Old Men - The wonderful pairing of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon as two old neighbors trying to make the otherís a living hell, yet at the same time respecting and befriending one another is a funny neighborly satire, Walter Matthau is just funny to look at in addition to his comedic brilliance and Lemmon, the more reserved of the two contributing with classic acting skills with comedy thrown in. Funny slapstic comedy. History of the World I - One of Mel Brooksí classic capers spanning the caveman age and ancient Rome, Brooks and Gregory Hines shine in this kooky comedy and Madeline Kahn is gorgeous and hilarious as always. Incredibles - The latest hit from Pixar is a more adult oriented subject matter, about a family of superheroes trying to remain low key and not fight crime, but when they are threatened they kick major booty. Great Pixar graphics and an action movie feel make this an enjoyable animated feature. Just one of the Guys - One of your typical 80 teen pop movies with Joyce Hyser playing Terri Griffith, an aspiring school journalist who can't get a scholarship because she is a girl, so she transforms herself into a guy just in time to fall in love with Rick Morehouse who thinks he is a good guy friend. Silly humor, non believable transformation (I can see the indentation on her chest) But fun and watchable. Terri does reveal her nice melons at the end and the movie stars a young, HOT Sherilynn Fenn. Kicking and Screaming - Will Ferrell as a kid soccer coach delivers his typical wacky physical humor blended in nicely with the little kid actors, with Robert Duvall as his perfectionist dad and Mike Ditka as his mentor, an enjoyable flick especially if you are a Ferrell fan. Lord of the Rings - The most successful and engrossing Adventure Epic Series of all time. Spectacular on every level, stays very true to the imaginative book, could be watched and awed over and over. The great Ian McKellan in a landmark role as gandalf, the coming out party of Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Viggo Mortensen in what will be his most memorable roles as Aragorn and of course our hobbit, Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. Just a wonderful series directed by the schlumpy Peter jackson who took a big risk with the trilogy and and payed off hugely for him. Man on the Moon - One of Jim Carrey best Dramatic/Comedic performances of his carreer. He was the late Andy Kaufmann in a wonderful life story directed by Milos Forman, funny, tragic and totally absorbing. A welcome change from his nutty roles into a more reserved performance, displaying his range as an actor. Nine Months - Hugh Grant is charming in this romantic comedy about the fear of commitment, of losing your independence and youth but maturing and getting excited to start a family with the one you love. With Tom Arnold, Robin Williams, Joan Cusack, Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Moore in funny performances, the birth sequence is to die for, so funny. Old School - 30 something friends Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson and Will Ferrell start a fraternity in order to remain living on campus in this silly comedy. Seems like at least 2 of these three always star in movies together and it almost always works out, Ferrell can act with anyone and Vaughn has a certain charisma that carries him through. An enjoyable film though not the best comedy by a long shot. Paycheck - Listen to what I am saying - Ben Affleck can’t act for s&*t, understood? A stupid flick that had me wanting to leave the whole time, erratic and non understandable, I just hated the movie, especially now that I know our crappy ex-friends loved it. Quigly Down Under - This was a hard one, another one I haven’t seen, but Quigly Down Under is the first thing that came to mind - I’m sure Tom Selleck and his Moustache had a great time. Rocky - The American classic that spawned 4 sequels with talk of a Rocky VI (Rocky fights bladder problems). The story of a local club fighter who is underestimated by the boxing champ, nearly shocks him with a victory and gains the respect and admiration of fans and the love of his wife. Wonderfully acted, real and emotional, slowly dwindling with each sequel. Shawshank Redemption - My favorite movie of all time, amazing in every aspect of movie making, acting, directing, plot, storyline, music and cinematography, about the life of a falsely convicted man who is sent to prison (Tim Robbins) and befriends a lifelong convict (Morgan Freeman) and their life behind bars with the rest of the crew. Very engrossing and satisfying movie that will have you cheer and keep you glued to your seat. The Ten Commandments - Cecil B. Demille’s timeless classic about the exodus of the Israelites out of Tyrannic Egypt. Great landmark performances by Yul Brynner as Pharaoh and Charlton Heston as Moses. Nicely remastered with great color and sound, a biblical epic that actually transferred well onto screen. Let my people go, dammit! Under the Tuscan Sun - Are you kidding me? I would never watch this sap, I had no entries for U and this is the first thing that came to mind. Victory - Soccer’s version of The Longest Yard, with a bit higher stakes. A group of Prisoner’s in a Nazi camp try to escape through a tunnel built for a while and use a soccer match as a decoy and in the process the group (consisting of the great soccer legend Pelé and Sylvester Stallone) find it in their guts to make the soccer match against the evil Germans an entertaining game, one that symbolically they would love to win. Dramatic, entertaining and boastig some great soccer action. Whole Nine Yards - Bruce Willis plays a hitman who moves in next to regular schmo Matthew Perry to be protected from a murder he committed. The two are then paired up to fight Kevin Pollack, the Hungarian Mob Boss who wants Willis dead. Surprisingly amusing and good chemistry between the 2, with the gorgeous Amanda Peet and Natasha Henstrige rounding out the cast. X-men 2 - Not only because I can't think of any other X titles, but because this is one of the only Marvel comics that entertained me on the big screen, with our hero mutant trying to assimilate into regular society while protecting themselves and humans from the corrupt mutants trying to take over the world, good performances by Iam McKellan and Patrick Stewart among others, dazzling special effects and a surprisingly good story. Young Frankenstein - Another one of Mel Brooks' classics, this one a spoof of Frankenstein, shot in black and white, bearing hilarious performances from Jean Wilder, Madelein Kahn, Cloris Leachman and Peter Boyle as Frankenstein. So many gags and one liners your head is gonna spin, very funny! Zoolander - Not one of Ben Stiller's best efforts, yet this movie somehow is turning into a mini classic, with his always partner in crime Owen Wilson, Stiller plays Derek Zoolander, a super male model challenged by the younger and more energetic Wilson. Their rivalry turns to friendship and they team up to bring the evil designer Ferrell's clothes empire down, enjoyable but a bit lacking.
