The Bottom Line It's another WO... join in and gain eternal happiness! (Offer may expire without notice.) 12 Entries so far.
Inspirations at an all-time low, so what do we do about it? Why, have a Write Off of course! (Silly question
)
Actually this is one Ive been thinking of doing for some time. Its about the categories on Epinions that you write in. Here are the questions:
What category have you had the most success in?
What category do you write the best reviews in, overall?
What category do you enjoy writing in the most?
What category do you feel most passionately about?
Well, those are the questions and no one-line answers please, youll be rated Not Helpful if you do!!
Here are my answers:
What category have you had the most success in?
It has to be Movies, which is odd because I never really intended to write movie reviews originally. I guess it just happened because it was far quicker watching a film and then reviewing it than reading a book or playing a computer game, since it took between 1.5 to 3 hours generally to watch a film, and anything Id forgotten was readily available on IMDB.com (once I started to care about getting the right information there!). I was actually on the verge of quitting Epinions altogether when I suddenly got a Top Reviewer hat in Movies, and that spurred me on to write a host of new Movie reviews. At the time of writing Im 42nd Most Popular (should read Most Read, really) Movie Reviewer ever on Epinions. Not bad going for someone who never intended to write them, I guess!
A large part of my success has to be the popularity on Google of my most read reviews, two of which (The Top Ten Movies of All Time and My Ten Favourite Romantic Comedies) have now passed the 10,000 view mark. Dunno how it happened, but Im not arguing with it!! ;-D
What category do you write the best reviews in, overall?
Id probably say Games. Must of my mis-spelt yout was spent poring through computer magazines, from the days of my ZX81 to the Commadore 16 to the dear old Speccy and the Atari ST. So it was natural that I should be able to write pretty decent computer game reviews, especially as Id written some in the past for a couple of E-zines on the ST. I think its partly to do with them being more structured than most of my other reviews, too even the bad ones tell you everything you need to know. Im very happy with most of my Game reviews, though there are a couple Im a bit ashamed of.
What category do you enjoy writing in the most?
Travel. The reason for this is that writing about places Ive been to brings back so many good memories about those places, and the times Ive spent with the people I went with. The main problem is that sometimes I cant remember enough relevant information to actually write a good review, and sometimes its so long ago that I just cant remember anything other than a few events, which while they are fond memories for me, they wouldnt make a good travel review! No other type of review brings back good memories like writing in Travel.
What category do you feel most passionately about?
The one Id started off writing in (and which Ive finally got a Top Reviewer hat in :-D) is Books. I love literature and especially epic works of fiction that you can get completely lost in (like Shogun or Lord of the Rings, or that make me laugh (especially the Discworld novels). I like to read the classics and anything a bit different, especially lesser-known works of famous authors. Apart from Books being one of the toughest categories on Epinions as far as ratings are concerned, I also find writing book reviews to be the most challenging out of all forms of reviewing. How you find peoples writing style and plot development is so subjective, and if you dont actually like a book, youre much less likely to finish reading it than you are to finish watching a bad film etc. (This is why I dont write many 3 or 1 star book reviews, in case you were wondering!) I find non-fiction harder to review so I dont do it very often, and childrens books are much harder to review than those for adults, though generally I only read childrens books if theyre enjoyable for adults too. (Or at least I think they will be!)
Well there you go, thats my attempt to get over writers block. I hope you will consider joining this WO, and that even Doc may join in! Thanks for reading my waffle,
CaptainD
