Pros: A good read and several characters to relate to.
Cons: Some of the characters did not develop as much as others.
The Bottom Line: The Friday Night Knitting Club is a good read about women bonding together over a craft of knitting. It has emotion and you may even cry.

| aubmom's Full Review: Kathleen Jacobs - The Friday Night Knitting Club |
The Friday Night Knitting Club was given to me by a friend for a summer read. The 360 page book by Kate Jacobs is not about knitting only, but knitting is what brings a group of women together. Kate Jacobs writes about seven very different women and the journey they lead. The thing they have in common is a Friday night knitting club where they can talk about life.
Overall
The main character of the book is Georgia is who is single mother of a 12 year old daughter. With the help of her widow friend Anita, she open a knitting shop in New York. This shops has become a place for people to gather on Friday nights for advice about knitting but eventually is become a place for sisterhood. The main attenders of these Friday night club meeting are 5 different women of various ages and they come from different circumstances. Georgia daughter Dakota attends this meeting but the author never gives the 12 year old feelings from first person. Over the course of a year, these women go through events that change their life. The shop owner Georgia is happy with her life and then her daughter's father enters the picture and an old friend from her past who has hurt her. She has to learn how to face her past and deal with her feelings. Mixed race relationships, pregnancies, infidelity, and grave illness are just a few of the topics that come up in these women's lives. The women all bond together in their own unique way to help each other out.
What is missing
As much as I enjoyed the book, I didn't feel like some of the characters developed as much as others. Of course it would have been a much longer book, but two of the characters were not developed but you did see how their strengths helped in the crisis of others.
How does knitting fit in?
You don't have to knit to enjoy this book but in between some of the chapters are knitting instructions that also can be taken as life instructions. At the end of the book, there are instructions to making a scarf with a web site to help. Also as the end of the book is a muffin recipe that Georgia's daughter Dakota served at a few of the meetings.
How did I like the book?
I was able to read to book in less than a week. It kept my attention not as a thriller book but as a book about women that I enjoyed getting to know and wanted to know how they dealt with their lives. It reminded me that girlfriends are important in life and that we need to take time to spend time with them. I would recommend it. On a side note, since I read the book, I also read where there is a movie coming out starring Julie Roberts in the near future. USA today did comment that it was like Steel Magnolias set in Manhattan.
