The Bottom Line For the Write Off of CaptainD

My answers to some questions from
CaptainD:

What category have you had the most success in?

I've reached the level of #280 in Books, and a couple of my reviews have made the "most popular" list. Some of my movie reviews have been read by many and seem appreciated---but my book reviews are better, in my own opinion.

My most popular reviews have all been of the four novels of Dan Brown---and, like many others, I'm eagerly awaiting the movie version of "The Da Vinci Code."

What category do you write the best reviews in, overall?

Most of my reviews are of non-fiction books on science, especially evolution and anthropology, and occasionally politics and economics. They get pretty fair readership, good ratings and comments, but they're not as successful as my reviews of fiction. The popularity of my reviews of the Dan Brown novels probably resulted from the confluence of science, history, religion and fiction in those works---all subjects I strongly relate to.

I occasionally offer a movie review, and I think they're pretty good. But I don't have the intense interest and knowledge about movies or the moviemaking art often in evidence by the best of many good writers here. So my reviews are from the perspective of an inexpert patron, and my movie reviews are often lean on the analysis side.

What category do you enjoy writing in the most?

I most enjoy writing reviews of non-fiction books, especially on subjects where there is a degree of controversy---like evolution and politics. I try to encourage giving consideration to the points of view of others---like trying to understand the thinking of those who question evolution theory---and those who don't accept today's dogma of the Left OR the right. I especially enjoy getting intelligent, well-informed comments that sometimes lead to very interesting dialogue with people for whom I have great respect-----as well, as occasional others---

I feel I learn a LOT from the process of reading, reviewing and discussing that is so effectively facilitated here in the Epinions community. As a political conservative I feel I'm a bit of a gadfly here among the predominantly leftish epi community, and I work at playing that role---if only to bring some balance to the dialogue. The central aspect of my life philosophy is---there is much ambiguity---about many things---

What category do you feel most passionately about?

Non-fiction books on science is the category where I feel the most competent, the most interest, and the most passion. In Writers Corner I've written what I thought were a couple of pretty good essays on subjects like astronomy and the solar system; evolution and biological classification---just for the sheer pleasure of sharing what I had learned in those areas. Having the time to fill in some gaps in my prior education in those areas is one of the very best things about being retired!

Thanks for asking, CaptainD!!
