See 'em all! And the collected works of Eisenstein, Kurosawa, and Melville, too...

speechless Stephen at the sheer number of non-English language films you've seen. I thought I was doing quite good but focusing on it I now realise my non-American viewing repertoire is essentially European with the odd Kurosawa and Yimou thrown in.

Humbly,
*grin*

myself back here, I had no idea you extended this w/o.... wish I could participate but my foreign film experience is pretty limited to France and Germany, with a bit of Italian thrown in...I am working on a list myself for my little Francophile write/off but as I said it's not as worldly as you need for this one...Wish I could come up with something since you've been so generous with your time for mine...

adieu for now

Filipino films (Reply to this comment)
by alocsin
Here are some Filipino films on Netflix:

Tanging Yaman
Dreamboy
All My Life
Nasaan Ka Man
Enteng Kabisote
Forevermore

Sadly, the best Filipino films were made in the 50s and 60s and none of them are available on DVD.

Definitely it's not too late to join!

I liked "8 Women," "The Emperor's Assassin" (which is blurred with "The Emperor's Shadow" in my memory, both being about the first emperor), "Italian for Beginners," "Once Upon a Time in China" (I?)

I was underwhelmed by the trailer for "The Widow of St. Pierre," despite adoring Juliette Binoche.

and i thought working in a movie theatre for five years meant i'd seen a lot of movies, i definitely have to come back and check out a lot of these movies. even if the w/o was still current i don't know if i'm not sure i've seen enough movies comparatively.

have you seen:

french: widow of st. pierre, 8 women?

chinese/taiwanese: if you liked farewell my concubine (probably only area i've seen enough to disagree, love farewell -- a lot of controversy when actor commit suicide) have you seen emperor and the assassin? (many same people involved) or for a "cuter" movie the road home, or wedding banquet? and jet li's Wong Fei Hung ji yi: Naam yi dong ji keung -- the one that's in china and at the turn of revolution time period (it's technically wong fei hung 2, but it gets classified differently sometimes and there's a different "2" out there now...)

? italian for beginners?

thanks for the review and intro to a bunch of movies.

Compiling the list made me more aware of how much more there is to see (of the world and of world cinema), though I've seen many movies. I already wanted more hours in the day!

Maybe I should make a list of the ten movies not on DVD I most want to see.

I'm bookmarking this link so that I can refer back to it. I was thinking I was behind in movie-watching, but I really didn't get a serious sense of how far behind until I read through this. I'm impressed! Clearly, I need to find more hours in my day...

that is, "Manila by Night" for Filipino entry. Also "Sanjuro" for favorite Japanese (etc.)

Great! I think you'll add some countries... and may even agree on one or two :)

Saddly, I must admit to not having seen enough foreign films to participate. I suck.

I'm not much for write-offs, but I've been looking for an idea for my 500th review (in about a week-and-a-half) and your idea will do about as well as any. Your list is outstanding and will provide me with some new ideas for films to investigate. I'll save my country by country comments for my own list later on.

I've seen your Scottish pick and did enjoy it. Wow, impressive range of foreign movies. I'm sure I can't halfway compare, not liking subtitles that much, but maybe five or six countries?
