| sharward's Full Review: IBM 104-key TrackPoint Keyboard |
During my first week on the job a few years ago, I courageously asked my new boss for a new keyboard for my workstation. My reasons were clear: The IBM TrackPoint keyboard is cheaper than a worker's comp claim for the tendinitis in my right wrist that is bound to flare up again if I don't get one!
Look at your keyboard right now. How are you sitting relative to the "B" key? I'll be the "B" key is a little to your left, even if only by a couple of inches. That's because you probably have a mouse with a mousepad on the right side of the keyboard. If that's the case, you've inadvertently "sort of" centered the left edge of the keyboard with the right edge of the mousepad.
So what's the harm in that, you say?
When your hands are on the "home keys" of the keyboard (ASDF-JKL;), you're a bit off-center... And your right wrist must arc awkwardly to the right in order to reach the keys. In my case, that extra little tug began to cause an itch in my wrist. The itch progressed to a tingle, then a twinge, then slight pain. Eventually it became unbearable. I thought I had the dreaded "CPS," but I soon learned from a doctor that it was "only" tendinitis. I was given a wrist brace and told to "take it easy" with the keyboard from now on. An ergonomic keyboard was recommended, but I never got used to typing on a volcano.
Then, a year or two later, I was issued a laptop computer at work (a Toshiba, with a TrackPoint-type device). After a couple of weeks of dedication, I got used to, and even began to love, the input device. Then I noticed that my wrist didn't hurt anymore!
I attribute my recovery to the fact that I no longer must center myself in front of a keyboard and mousepad... And the extra space I have on my desk is nothing to complain about, either!
