Pros: Funny, inspiring, and recognizes the struggle for self-confidence most everyone deals with.
Cons: A little too indifferent about bullying
The Bottom Line: I recommend seeing the movie with your kids as an opening for discussions about bullying. It's not the best film in the world, but it opens doors of communication.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
For Wade and Ryan the first day of high school is an adventure they are eager to undertake. Their hopes for popularity and a girlfriend overshadow the anxiety and they face the day with anticipation. Unfortunately, they wear matching shirts, not by design but accident, and become the targets of the senior bully.
It doesnt take long for the excitement to turn to misery and with the help of their newest friend, a geek of their caliber, they seek to hire a bodyguard. Drillbit Taylor is a bum. He takes his morning shower on the beach, sleeps in the great outdoors and begs for money. He applies for the position of bodyguard with the intention of getting enough cash to go to Canada.
The three teenagers and Drillbit form a bond and while the relationship is based on numerous lies, it is strong. This movie is fun and stands as a reminder that we all need a bit of help once-in-a-while. The characters are believable, for the most part, and the story isnt boring.
I enjoyed Drillbit Taylor and would recommend it to parents of children between ten and fifteen. Its a nice film to share as a family. Older kids might think its lame and younger ones wont understand the nuances. Its not for everyone.
On a side note, Adam Baldwin makes a funny cameo appearance. If youve ever seen My Bodyguard (1980), starring Baldwin and Chris Makepeace, youll understand the humor. If not, it might go unnoticed.
