As you can tell from my title, I think Google is a pretty nifty search engine. I have tried quite a few search engines, but I always go back to Google because it always gives me the sites I am looking for.
The most difficult part of using any search engine is using the right keywords to find the sites you are looking for. I find that either Google is best at this, or I am best at telling Google what I want compared to the other sites.
On other sites I just get frustrated if I have a difficult search. On Google, I type in a few keywords, and the sites are usually what I am looking for. If they are not, I re-evaluate by looking at the sites it gave me, and then trying to figure out how I can progress from there to what I really want. It is always best to remove and add keywords to come up with different sites.
And Google seems to have a lot more sites listed than many other search engines do. This feature automatically makes it a better search engine since there is more variety to choose from when your results are listed, and it is more likely that the site you are looking for is there.
Google is great whether you are just looking up something for personal interest or if you need information for a lab report. There are just so many sites available to Google, that I feel it is the only option.
Picture This!
Google has a lot of options as well. One that I use quite frequently is the image search. You can click on the "Images" tab to just search through the images. Whatever your keyword is, Google will find a whole slew of pictures that match that keyword. This is great if you are looking for a particular picture, for whatever reason.
Now Easier Than Ever!
If you like using Google, you have to try out their toolbar, which you can download from their site (just click on the "Google Toolbar" link on the homepage). It only takes a few minutes to download and set up and it sits on the bottom of your browser. If you want to do a quick search, you don't have to go to the site first. Just put your keywords in the toolbar, and hit "Search Web", and this will take you to a results page.
I find that the toolbar is great for picking up on plagiarised reviews here on Epinions. If a review seems to be too well written, I will just copy and paste a section into the toolbar. With just one click, I will be able to see if the review is taken from another page, or if it is a unique work. If it is taken from another page, all you have to do then is copy the URL of the page it is taken from and leave a comment (after rating "NH" of course!) with the link to the site. Ok, ok, I sound like the Epinions police, but I work too hard on my reviews to have people getting credit for work they haven't even done themselves!
Groups
Want to find a group to post in? No problem, just click on the "Groups" tab from the Google homepage. This will take you to a listing of different subjects, which vary from Social Issues to Science. I personally prefer Yahoo! Groups though.
Can't Decide?
Can't decide what you're looking for? You can browse through Google by using the Google directory. It's simple, just click on the "Directory" tab and you are taken to a page with a listing of subjects. Keep clicking to narrow down the topic until you get to a web site. This is a great option!
Thanks for reading :)
