RAINBOW SHEEP by Kim Chatel
Kim Chatel has written a very clever book combining a sweet story, art and crafts all in one. I think this story will appeal to a variety of ages. I know my 11 year old bookworm enjoyed it while I read it to her. She has since picked it up and read it several time on her own and just perused the illustrations time and time again. Now on to the story...
RAINBOW SHEEP
Genevieve is a shepherdess with a flock of dirty grey and brown sheep. She cares very much for her sheep. One week they were dirtier than usual. The rain had been coming down for a whole week. This left the sheep muddy, the grass mushy and Genevieve wet. She'd had enough!
Genevieve's hill was as tall as a castle spire. She climbed right to the top. Rain splattered her face. The clouds were heavy and grey, like the belly of a sleepy kitten.
She tickled the clouds until they left and let in the sunshine. Oh, what a wonderful idea. I do wish I could do this here in Scotland.
However, this revealed a very sad, pale rainbow. Genevieve found out the rainbow was sad because everyday was the same. The arches of the rainbow became paler the sadder the rainbow was.
Genevieve was worried now. It made sense to her that rainbows needed happiness to stay colorful, just like children needed milk and broccoli and warm hugs to grow.
Genevieve gives the gift of imagination to the rainbow so that every day will be different and he will always be happy.
Mermaids? asked the rainbow. A bit of its color returned.
Yes, said Genevieve, mermaids that live in castles with starfish chandeliers and coral couches.
In fact she made the rainbow so happy he started crying tears of joy.
The rainbow cried and laughed, sprinkling the hillside with color. Genevieve's sheep blossomed like spring flowers.
ILLUSTRATIONS
Kim Chatel created all the illustrations with fiber art. They are amazing. The first page shows Genevieve hugging a sheep, with her long blonde hair blowing in the wind. Theres one wheres she tickling the clouds and the cloud is shaped just like a kitten. Its really cute.
My favorite picture is of monkeys sitting in palm trees eating bananas. Bookworm's fave is of a mermaid reclining on a couch with a whale playing a guitar. Why are monkey and mermaids in a book about rainbow sheep? Well, you will just have to buy it and find out.
Felting for Fun-Directions for felting.
In the back of the book are directions for doing you own felting projects, like felted soap, and your very own Rainbow Sheep! It explains what felting is and where it originates from. The types of felting needles are also explained along with the different types of wool and where you can buy supplies.
Don't forget Safety. There is a section on staying safe when felting. An age limit is suggested, all with adult supervision. The needles are very sharp!
Rainbow Sheep is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ficitonwise and Guardian Angel Publishing.
