The A2Z W/O - the alphabetical random movie W/O - The Witch's Choices
Jun 03 '05 (Updated Jun 12 '05)
The Bottom Line A bottle of wine, shrieking women, handsome vampires, a ghoulish ghoul or a gorgeous witch and popcorn to throw at the screen, what more can you ask for?
I love a good horror film, and these kinds of classic "horror" films are my favorites. Well, someone had to do it. I also love a good laugh and some of these are a laugh a minute simply 'cause they are so outrageous or off the mark.
So, sit back, try to relax and follow through my own version of the A2Z W/O hosted by romasuave . Many thanks.
I tried to keep on topic, but I wandered once or twice. And I just gave up at the end, I'm afraid . Too many bad "B" flicks to choose from in the "Z" category.
So, here are my entries:
A - Addams Family and Addams Family Values Raul Julia and Angelica Huston, need I say more
B - Bell, Book and CandleWonderful Witch Story with Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, a classic
C -Clash of the Titans Greek Myths Mashed
D - Dracula - 1931 version with Bella "Children of the Night" I love it
E - Escape to Witch Mountain Ray Milland is so bad! lol
F - Frankenstein again the 1931 version with Boris Karloff - another classic
G - Ghost Story obscure movie with Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and John Houseman, some big names and a demanding ghost played by Alice Krige. A suspenseful little tale.
H - Haunted Aidan Quinn plays a tormented soul in a haunted house
I - I Married a Witch 1942 with of all people Veronica Lake as the witch. Witches curses and witches in love.
J - Jason and the Argonauts More Greek Myths Mashed, but ya gotta love the Ray Harryhausen monsters and Todd Armstrong as the hunky Jason.
K - Killer Klowns from Outer Space - One of the worst films ever made, in my opinion, but with a couple of cheap red wines and some popcorn it becomes hilarious. The set looks like it was stolen from one of those 60s Irwin Allen productions. I just had to put this one in, besides, I needed a K movie.
L - Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires Peter Cushing as Van Helsing in this Hammer Studios kung-fu vampire hunter's action film. David Chang as the kung-fu lead with John Forbes Robertson as Dracula.
M - Maskque of the Red Death What list would be complete without an "Uncle Vinnie" film. Vincent Price as the lead in a classic Roger Corman film. Satan worshiping Prince holds a deadly ball during the plague filled middle ages.
N - Necronomicon Jeffrey Combs as H. P. Lovecraft in a trilogy of stories loosely based on Lovecrafts works. Pacts with the devil, mad scientists and futuristic cops. Interesting...
O - Oblong Box Another classic Uncle Vinnie movie, this one also has Christopher Lee in a guest appearance. Watch for the witch doctor! Another one for popcorn and laughs.
P - Picture of Dorian Gray If you have never seen this 1945 classic, it will set chills up your spine, as this leaves a lot of the work to your own warped imagination. But the cameos are fun; look for Angela Lansbury, Donna Reed, Peter Lawford and Cedric Hardwicke narrating. Hurd Hatfield stars.
Q - Quiet Place in the Country Stars Franco Nero as a painter and Vanessa Redgrave as his mistress in a house with strange happenings, a medium and a ghost. Painter loses mind in this version.
R - Return from Witch Mountain Christopher Lee and Bette Davis with the two alien kids from the first movie. Mad scientists and nuclear reactors, but what happened to the witches?
S - The Satanic Rites of Dracula Christopher Lee's last vampire movie in this Hammer Studios production with Peter Cushing as a Van Helsing descendant.
T - The Terror One of Roger Cormans worst "crank 'em out" films with Boris Karlof and Jack Nicholson supposedly put together in three days. This one is choppy because of the five different directors that worked on this film, though Corman got the credit. We got a witch, we got a ghost, we got Nicholson lost in the plotless story and we get a classic film because of all the mish mash.
U - The Unvited One of my all time favorite ghost stories, simply cause the ghost is left more to your imagination than is produced on screen. Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey in a haunted house on the English coast, with a tale of suicide, a torrid love affair and a haunted child. Great stuff!
V - Vibes Cindy Lauper as a beautician with a spirit guide named Louise and who "astral travels" and Jeff Goldblum can tell the history of an item by touching it. OK, they both end up in Equador looking for a lost treasure with Peter Faulk and they both fall in love. What's not to like here? Still waiting for this to turn up on DVD.
W - Witches of Eastwick All star cast with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. Great lines, excellent story and Jack is just perfectly gross as the Devil. A must have in your collection!
X - Xanadu Yup, you read right. Why? 'Cause Olivia Newton-John is a muse or goddess. With Gene Kelly and Michael Beck. The music is probably more memorable than the story, but it fits!
Y - Young Frankenstein This is a Mel Brooks classic, with Gene Wilder in a classic role and all the Mel Brooks regulars - Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman and Cloris Leachman. Also stars Peter Boyle as the song and dance Frankenstein Monster, Gene Hackman and Teri Garr.
Z - I was torn between a Zombie movie (pick one, any one, they are all the same with some very "stiff" acting) or "The Zodiac Killer" which has no ghosts or ghouls or witches but has a great title for this little offering of movies. But that movie was just as bad. So I leave it up to you. I'm sure you got a favorite Zombie movie, but nothing there really tickles my fancy.
After doing my 100th review for Epinions, I felt I needed something "lighter". Thanks for reading.
