| ss64's Full Review: Linn Genki CD Player |
I'll start by quoting Q Magazine - "Others may dazzle but you'll always be wondering if Linn wasn't getting it just right. Sound***** Value***** Features*****"
There are other players around that are more impressive in a 5 minute demo, but the Genki is a player you can listen to all day without fatigue.
I bought this player as a result of hearing an extended demo at a HIFI show - actually it was several demo's as various other manufactures were using the Genki to show off their speakers, amps etc
Having a very neutral sound balance the Genki is easy to match with other equipment, it also includes a good output level and volume control - so you can miss out the pre-amp and plug it straight into a power amp.
You can look at this as an expensive CD player or a cheap LINN CD player - I don't mean by this that you are paying for a badge, but that Linn have a reputation for building things that last. This player is not going to fall apart in a couple of years time.
Yes the CD Carrier is a bit cheap looking, but if looks are the important thing you should buy the Musical Fidelity X-Ray instead.
The Genki is an HDCD player and many wonder if this format will ever really take off. Two things I'll say on this, firstly much of the advantage comes from the updated electronics and this benefit affects all CD's not just HDCD. Secondly there are more HCDC's out there than are advertised - for some reason it's rarely mentioned on the label (even Linn records keep it a secret)
The only bad thing I've found with the Genki is that the remote includes controls for the Linn pre-amp, linn Tuner and Clock. If you don't have these then the extra buttons just get in the way.
This player is now available in a trendy silver finish. Make sure you compare both finishes - I found I much prefer the original understated black.
