The Bottom Line For whatever it's worth.....
The Food Lover's Write-Off What is your favorite: 1. Soft Drink? I hardly ever drink soft drinks, but, on those rare occasions, I'll take regular Coke but it has to have a lot of ice. Enough ice so that it can barely float in the glass. 2. Ice Cream Flavor? Chocolate, the darker, the better. Preferably with a touch of brandied black cherry. 3. Fast Food Restaurant? I do not like fast food, so I have no favorite. If I must eat fast food, any one is as good as another. Given a choice though, I'll go for a bowl of ramen. 4. Type of Pizza? Thin crust Italian pizzas topped sparingly with tomato, anchovy and a bit of cheese, lightly drizzled with olive oil. 5. Thanksgiving Dinner? I do not find the turkey a tasty fowl. Duck or goose for me. Roast beef, rare, is always welcome. 6. Snack Food? I do not eat in between meals. At most, I'll have an espresso at around 4 pm. 7. Side Dish? It depends. With roast rack of lamb, rice pilaf and a dish of cherry tomatoes and fresh mushrooms sauteed in olive oil with fresh basil thrown in before serving. 8. Food to Eat While Driving? I do not eat while driving. 9. Food for Breakfast? A big modified Filipino breakfast before a golf game. A full Filipino breakfast features fried garlic rice, fried or poached or scrambled eggs (I prefer poached) and fried meat and/or fish. At home, there is always a choice of meat and fish. I like fried milkfish (i.e., bangus) belly and some type of sausage (I like the native longganisa hamonado, which is a sweetish-spicy pork sausage, or English bangers). 10. Sit-Down Restaurant? It depends where I am and what I feel like eating. In Metro Manila, for continental food, I favor Tivoli (the fine dining restaurant of the Mandarin Hotel) and Gaita Fores' Pepato. For a simple, hearty Italian meal, I like Dario Gardini's Caruso's. 11. Italian Dish? Tough choice. It's hard to beat a melt-in-your-mouth osso buco served with a simple risotto and a good Brunello di Montalcino though. Either that or good spaghetti in a simple tomato-basil sauce. 12. Chinese Dish? Another tough choice. Pushed to the wall, I'd say it's a toss-up between fried crab with garlic and chili, or crispy pigeon with toasted salt. Roast goose at Yung Kee (HK) is always nice; as are the abalone and suckling pig at Victoria City seafood restaurant (HK). 13. Sandwich? I have a weakness for Sabrett's spicy hotdog with onions, sauerkraut and a bit of mustard. 14. Cheese? Manchego viejo, the more aged, the better. Cave-aged gruyere. Saint Albray and cambozola are also quite nice. 15. Donut? I hardly ever eat them; but if I do, it would be a sugar-glazed Krispy Kreme with a cup of strong black coffee, in winter. 16. Type of dessert? Dark chocolate or lemon souffle. 17. Type of Cake? Coffee Crunch. 18. Vegetable I like many, but favor pumpkin (roasted so that it caramelizes on top and becomes soft and creamy inside) and bok choy (steamed and barely seasoned). 19. Fruit? No contest: mangoes from the Philippines. 20. Food In Bed? I do not eat in bed. 21. Beer? I do not really drink beer. 22. Drink With Dinner? Fine red Bordeaux and/or white Burgundy. I also like some chardonnays from California. 23. Fruit Juice? Fresh orange juice. I drink it every morning. and Finally... 24. What is your favorite meal? My medium-rare herbed (marjoram, thyme, rosemary) roast rack of lamb with my brother's wild rice pilaf and my favorite side dish as described in #7 above. Add a good red Bordeaux or Burgundy and we're in business. |
