Good advice (Reply to this comment)

Are your tents earthquake proof out that way? I guess they can just sway with the ground. Hope your next trip is better. -Dave

Sup, this was an extremely good review! Thanks for sharing all the stories and info. If I had a hat for Outdoors I'd give you a MH. Anyway...take it easy.

What a way to turn in-laws into out-laws... (Reply to this comment)

Alan,
I can completely empathize with you about being the "local expert" and dealing with people unwilling or unable to purchase quality equipment. Among my friends I'm the "bike guru", the one you go to with all your complaints and questions.
I can't tell you how many times I've been at bike races or on a long 6 hour ride with friends and witnessed a crucial component failure. I usually have to bite back a quick response and just deal with the situation at hand, although most of them are caused by taking poor quality equipment into an environment it's not intended for.
I really enjoyed hearing your camping disaster after the fact as I can relate to similar weekends. I must say you've gotten me thinking about replacing my Coleman tent with something a little better, although I do have almost 3 years on mine now.
Great job with this advice write-up and may you have better camping experiences with your new dual REI 6-person tent setup.

Of course I'm the only one who read it in the hopes of actually having a miserable experience.
Nice job,

Wow, you're the first person I know of that had a positive thing to say about the tent. Glad to hear that you've had some positive experiences with the tent.
The kite issue was with a 3 man coleman tent. It appeared that the small rain fly was on bungee cords and the rain fly only came down about 1/3 of the way around the tent. Probably just to cover the see-thru top. I've never seen that issue with either Weathermaster that my family owned.
Thanks for the comment,
Alan

I learned a lesson (Reply to this comment)

really fast. With our Coleman Weathermaster I bought extra stakes and staked it right to the ground rather than attaching it to the poles the way it's set to be. Haven't had the "kite" problem since :-) Sometimes it just takes a little thinking outside the box.
It held up great when we had 8-inches of rain in Florida too.

Real Life Adventures... (Reply to this comment)

...would be easier to read if you separated your paragraphs with a line return and space!
Lord, I suffered right along with your relatives with the collapse story!
There's nothing worse than being "Mr. Camper" with a load of pilgrims in tow.
