Really? (Reply to this comment)
by jfranjevic
I really didn't like this reviewer, since the reviewer really doesn't know how to write, and his list of best Christmas movies really isn't very good because there's great X'mas movies missing and he / she really uses really too much and I wonder if these reviewers get paid to review because they really shouldn't, since they really don't know much about the world of cinema, but that's par for the course anymore - really!

expand your horizon's man. are you a first year film student? because your list reflects such limited viewing. try the following...
eraserhead
irreversible
el topo
the holy mountain
henry: portrait of a serial killer
audition
guinea pigs
skins
them (ils)
hide and creep
slacker
waking life
I'm curious to know what you mean by "must see." do you feel the movies you listed defined a certain genre or a human condition? if so, what?

A few strange choices...but okay (Reply to this comment)
by rmurray847
First of all, I commend you for including GONE WITH THE WIND. It is so often frowned upon these days...but let's face it, a movie that is nearly 70 years old and 4 hours long still provides wonderful entertainment, even though I've seen it nearly a dozen times. It IS the ultimate big studio movie...and belongs in the top 5 on the list of all time greats.

SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISHER doesn't cut the mustard, IMO. And that's why these lists are always so much fun...because it shows how much personal preference enters into this. I really wish folks would post "My Favorite 10" rather than the best 10. I might include CITIZEN KANE on the best 10, because I can recognize it's greatness within the history of film. I DO like the movie...but not top 10.

On the other hand, few would say MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL is one of the best 10 of all time...but it's near the top of my "Favorite" 10 of all time.

RAIDERS & MOCKINGBIRD are good choices too, by the way.

Fun to See Another's Opinion! (Reply to this comment)
by against-me
There are definitely some in there I would omit and some I would like to add (mainly The Godfather), but it is always fun to read another's point of view and as long as you have justification, fun to try and understand as well.

I'm glad your list includes both newer films and classics. My own top 10 would include both, if I could narrow the list of movies I love down to less than fifty.

Great job here, and thanks for the link!

I'm gonna tackle my "10 best" some day. I've listed a few categories of top 10 such as Sci-fi, musicals, Westerns, etc. I love your list and was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of "Moulin Rouge" which my wife and I loved. Some of my best friends hated it. Oh, well, such is life. The wonderful thing about movies is that my list may have 10 different "Best" movies because there are so many to choose from. Your brief description of each film took me down memory lane. Great job!

I think--like mgm--that a list like this will vary with mood, etc. It's just too much of a challenge to narrow down all of the movies ever made into a list of the ten greatest.

However, you've done a great job and have written about each movie in a way that invites people not to resist either watching them for the first time or giving them an encore!

Kudos!
AJ :-)

10 best movies of all time (Reply to this comment)
by mgm721977
I like your list...although I disagree...as do we all when it is of an opinionated world we live in. I would include a few that you mentioned...and a few you didn't.

Recently I even made a list of my favorite 128 movies of all time, seeded them, and then held a "tournament-style" thing with all those who wanted to play...interesting that the final 4 were pretty much different for all ten people...

Movies are good, not because of what someone else thinks...but by what we take from them personally. I therefore could never "argue" that "your" favorite movies are wrong. Mine however, are as follows:

Shawshank Redemption
Braveheart
Godfather II
Caddyshack
Saving Private Ryan
Hoosiers
Pulp Fiction
The Usual Suspects
Miracle
The LOTR Trilogy

and the funny thing is...it changes depending on the mood Im in.

I meant I hadn't seen them :P I have since seen a majority of the "classics". I recently reviewed Sierra Madre too, though I didn't find it to be quite as good as I had hoped. Besides, I don't need to show you no stinkin badges! ;)

you haven't seen enough of the classics. ;> Still, a good job. If you see some of the ones like Devil and Daniel Webster, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Scarface, etc. etc. they blow several of your picks away, at least in my humble opinion. Thanks for a good read, bud! :>

Ha Ha!!! Field of Dreams was actually on my list when I started putting this together, but got bumped...too funny. Like I said in my review though, movies could pop in and out of this list, sort of like an evolving monster...lol

Thanks for taking a look at my list :)

Shawshank! (Reply to this comment)
by millinocket, millinocket is a Lead on Epinions in Movies
Oh yes, this would be on my list for sure. Except that I can't seem to make a list. Kudos for actually producing one - I have the same problems as you stated - I feel like there are some classics that I need to see before I even try it (haven't even seen Casablanca, but I did see The Long Title Movie - maybe that counts.....;)

I like the mix you have here between "classics" and more recent releases. Even though I might have to argue for Field of Dreams over The Natural.......but that's only because FoD makes me cry...;)

Great job!

Re: Very good list... (Reply to this comment)
by three_ster
You know, I considered writing an even bigger list, but I think it is cheating. It's easy to be a critic, but you need to be able to stand behind what you feel are the best, not list 100 to 200 without any real order, and accept the criticism that comes with the territory.

When I write about my 10 guilty pleasures...lol... I will be expecting a lot of back-lash...lol

Very good list... (Reply to this comment)
by Gr8ful
You must have put a lot of thought into it to leave out so many greats, but alas only room for ten.

I would have had to squeeze in "Braveheart" and "Star Wars" somewhere in the mix but even so this is a good list.

Thanks for sharing,
Gr8ful :-)

Don't feel bad about not having a list yet. Look how long it took me to get one together? Since June of 2000. Some people post a list as their first entry on Epinions....lmao.

Thank you for the kind words both of you :)

Good point about it being important to cinema. Much the same way Bladerunner was. Both good films in their own right, but neither cracks my top 10.

Thx for sharing your opinion :)

"Citizen Kane: Highly overrated in my opinion, though it did have a nice twist at the end."

I wouldn't say CK is the best movie, but it's the most important. And it has nothing to do with the story. In a nutshell, everything you see in modern cinema was done first by Citizen kane.

But you do have a respectable list, sir.

Hey thats why we all get the chance to write on the topic :) It's all about opinion! Lord of the rings is on there for a couple of reasons, and seriously, I spent hours debating on that spot on my list. To be sure, it is #10 out of these films, and like I said.... it could change, it could stay the same... ya never know!

You should write up a list ;) I like some of your choices already!

to write with any authority on this subject, but I'm not a big fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. Some of my all time favorites are: Dr. Strangelove; Silence of the Lambs; Raiders of the Lost Ark; Titanic; Seven Beauties; Rear Window; and Walkabout. Kind of a diverse group, I know. Thanks for making me ponder...

Godfather: Too Slow, too much unneeded delay in the film.

Citizen Kane: Highly overrated in my opinion, though it did have a nice twist at the end.

Booty Call: Hmmm... maybe its #11? ;)
