The Other Side of Midnight was the best Sidney Sheldon book I have ever read. It was full of suspense, romance, justice, and injustices. This was one of those books that will keep you up till the wee hours of the morning because you just cant put it down.
The story revolves around two women: Nicole Page a beautiful French young woman who learns about lifes harsh realities through lies and betrayal and Catherine Alexander an ambitious and naïve woman who gets caught up the Nicoles web of revenge. Set in the years surrounding World War II, Sheldon uses his gift of words to weave a complex tale that brings the era and characters to life.
Nicole makes her way up through society driven by an overwhelming desire for revenge on the man who wronged her. For eight years she does nothing that will not help her on this quest. She uses everything at her fingertips to manipulate and control powerful men in giving her what she wants.
Despite Nicoles ruthlessness and unfeeling treatment of those around her, Sheldon creates a character so intricate that you cant help but care about her fate. You follow her dealings with nail-biting suspense wishing you could consume the book faster just to find out what happens next.
Ones heart also goes out to Catherine who makes you want to at once slap her and save her. The book comes to an end too quickly and yet leaves you wanting more. The sequel, Memories of Midnight provides this but is not as engaging as this first book.
This review does not to the book justice. However, if you are a fan of suspense books tied in with a little bit of romance, this is the book for you. Just dont read this book if you have more important things to do. Its a great novel for flying. Itll make the time pass very quickly.
