Presenting...The Kill Your Idols Write-Off. Epinions reconsiders the classics.

Jun 12 '05

The Bottom Line Have a sacred cow album that you don't consider to be sacred? Join the Kill Your Idols Write-Off.

Everyone has them. You know what they are. Albums that are considered great by a good majority of the populace, yet you simply cannot fathom why this is so.

Do you wonder why an album as full of outdated hippie cliches as Surrealistic Pillow keeps getting praised while less dated music from the same era gets ignored? Does it irk you that more people know Nirvana's Nevermind than any of the Pixies albums it borrows from? Does it get down your craw that people fawn over the Eagles Hotel California but ignore either of Gram Parson's two albums?

Sure you do. We all do. So does Jim Derogatis, Pop Music Critic of the Chicago Sun-Times. And he decided to do something about it. He put together a collection of reviews of supposedly classic albums in which the albums were re-evaluated and found to be less classic than conventional wisdom holds. Among the albums re-evaluated were Sgt Pepper, Led Zeppelin IV, Tommy, Rumours, Pet Sounds, The Joshua Tree and numerous others. The book was titled Kill Your Idols: A New Generation of Rock Writers Reconsiders the Classics and began with Pepper and ended with Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

In honor of Derogatis's work (as well as the work of the other critics whose reviews appeared in the book) I have decided to put together the first annual:

Kill Your Idols Write-Off.

The Rules

Pick an album that's considered sacred by a good majority of the populace, yet you cannot figure out why this album is worshiped like Buddha on a pedestal. Review that album.

Some prime examples include but are most definitely not limited to:

Sgt Pepper
Pet Sounds
Never Mind The Bollocks
Tommy
Rumours
Boston
Use Your Illusion I and II
Anything by Coldplay
Anything by The Doors
Anything by The Eagles

and so on.

Of course you can review more than one album for this write-off.

The only hardcore ground rule is that this write-off is album, not artist oriented. Although in the spirit of the Derogatis edited tome, reviewing a greatest hits set (such as the Eagles Greatest Hits) is acceptable.

Once you have written and posted your review, either shoot me an e-mail (at NOSPOL@aol.com) or leave a note in the comments section of this review. I'll add your review to the list on the official Kill Your Idols write-off page at:

http://members.aol.com/NOSPOL/kyi.html

Have fun killin' some Idols and get those reviews in!
