Great list but I would say Saving Private Ryan should be in the top 5 AT LEAST!

Roman,

I suppose the fact Spielberg's movies -- with rare exception -- are popular exposes him to the charge that he is schmaltzy and panders to the masses.

Frankly, I think E.T. and Raiders should have won for Best Picture the years they were nominated. Gandhi was good, yes, but it doesn't easily come to mind in our hearts, does it?

despite all the critics of Spielberg, how many other direcotrs have the range, talent and vision of Spielberg? From incredible storytelling abilities to putting it all together on screen.

I am so anxious to see War of the Worlds that I'm afraid I might be let down, but Spielberg does have a way to guarantee a great final result.

Again, Alex, good review and don't listen to the newbies! lol

Oh, I agree totally that we're lucky to have Spielberg as one of our best directors...even if he does give us the occasional Hook or 1941.

Thanks for the super-duper comment, too!

Aren't we, to have a Spielberg in our day and age?

And I'm lucky to be able to read this great review. I loved the list and the way you presented it.

Because you didn't include Temple of Doom... just kidding. That was an atrocious movie, especially considering how good the ones on either side of it were.

I always thought that 1941 was underappreciated, myself. I still get a kick out of that movie. And I never knew that Empire of the Sun was a Spielberg movie - huh, you learn something every day.

Despite what the pundits say, I thought this was a very helpful review.

Kyrane,

Thanks for the kind comment! I'm glad my list got you interested in more Spielberg films. I think you'll enjoy quite a few of them...particularly Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Thanks Alex that's a great line-up of spielberg's greatest. Personally only seeing 3 of them myself (ET, Jurassic Park and Minority) you may have entised me to go and catch up..

Thanks

Gavia,

Personally, I've never caught 1941 in its entirety; I've seen bits and pieces of it, and (perhaps because I see the scenes out of context) it seems too frantic and zany for my taste.

In the behind the scenes DVD of the Indiana Jones trilogy set, a gag involving a fold-a-way clothes hanger that earned Raiders of the Lost Ark one of its biggest laughs actually originated in 1941, and John Williams' "1941 March" is pretty good.

Spielberg himself, however, admits 1941 wasn't one of his best movies.

Thanks for the kind comment!

Oddly enough, I've only seen The Color Purple once, so I'm not really "qualified" to review it yet, much less rank it.

I do remember being somewhat miffed when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science snubbed Spielberg by not nominating him for Best Director.

Roman,

I was inspired by your list of Top 10 Spielberg films; the least I could do, really, was acknowledge your contribution!

Thanks for the comment, and thanks for inspiring me to come up with my own list.

Good read, Alex, thanks for linking my top 10 in your review. Telynor, The Color Purple was a Great film (on my top 10) but I guess a director as great as Spielberg can't be limited by only a top 10, maybe a top 15 is more appropriate.

I have never seen Empire of the Sun but I am renting it on Netflix, I hope I like it as much as you did,

I'm surprised that you didn't list The Color Purple on there -- I still feel that Spielberg and Whoopi Goldberg should have gotten Oscars for that one. Great list! -- Telynor
