AT&T "Free 2 Go" prepaid uses the same system as AT&T service plans, so the pros and cons of the system apply. But as a very light user of my cell phone, I have found AT&T's prepaid plan to be quite dependable and inexpensive. Airtime cards start at $25, which buys minutes at the rate of 35˘ local and 85˘ roaming. The card lasts for 90 days, and if the account is incremented before the expiration, unused airtime is carried over. With my infrequent use, having a phone available at all times costs me $8.33 per month. Checking on my airtime balance is easy; call 1-800-361-1265 (rather than 1-800-888-7600, which switches prepaid over to the previous number). Adding airtime is simple, calling the above number with a credit card in hand and stepping through an automated process, or buying a prepaid card at an AT&T store and calling in with that card in hand. Having AT&T prepaid for almost a year and have had no problems (no bills, either, with prepay) other than a lost airtime rebate promised by AT&T. I was finally given the amount as a credit on my account from a very pleasant Customer Service Rep at AT&T. I don't know of any service in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area that is less expensive than this prepay plan. BTW, one can switch to a service plan with AT&T if he/she fins themselves using more airtime than expected.
