| pablothegreat's Full Review: The Last Mimzy |
I watched The Last Mimzy tonight prior to allowing my child to watch it and am glad I did! Maybe I am a prude but sheesh! Naked men, children using bad language, keeping secrets about danger from parents, and more are in this movie. It is rated PG and I saw many reviews saying this is a movie for ages 6 years old and up. Let me just say, if you are okay with your 6 year old seeing the full naked backside of a middle aged man, then sure. As always if you do not want to be spoiled a little, click away now as I have no clue what you know or do not know about this film.
This movie focuses on two siblings who find a unique box on the beach. Inside are lots of objects that end up being futuristic and do lots of things. When I heard of this movie before, I misunderstood 'toys come alive'. I expected all of their toys to come alive but it is the objects inside of the box that come to life. Each day they seem to learn more and more about these objects. Rocks float in the air, objects light up, and a stuffed animal really talks. The children also change and know more about the universe somehow. Little by little, the adults notice these changes in the children and start to be concerned. The girl always carries around the bunny, talking to it as if it is alive. The boy excels at a school subject that was difficult for him prior to this.
The FBI gets involved when an object causes a power outage. The entire family is taken to a holding facility and the house scrutinized for possible terrorist activity. Finally the bunny tells the girl why it is there and where it came from. They have to send back the bunny to it's own time to save the future race of mankind. The boy's science teacher and his live-in girlfriend are helpful to the kids as the science teacher has been having dreams that foretell the future. Will the kids be able to get away from the FBI to send the rabbit back? Does the rabbit die before they have time to send it back? Is the future of mankind saved? Do the children keep their new special powers?
The objects seem to talk to the children in a weird musical electronic way, viewers do not hear words just noise. This was irritating from the very first time. The children hide their discoveries from their parents for most of the movie even when they look dangerous (during the power outage). The boy says the word "sucks" about 35 times as in "life sucks". Not a particularly pleasant word that I would want my daughter to pick up saying! The science teacher lives with his girlfriend and is shown in bed with her...that didn't bother me as much as him walking to the bathroom in only a shirt...showing his naked backside. Yep exactly what I want my little girl to be seeing, NOT! Children may also be disturbed by the possibility of the rabbit dying and the family being forcibly taken by the FBI. I know my daughter would have been screaming at the television if she saw that!
The "aliens" look frightening but they are not shown often or for very long. I loved the complex equations in the film and especially the change in the spiderweb. The boy being able to emit the weird sounds was definitely strange. The best acting in the movie was done by the two children and the science teacher, the rest seemed to just be filling up space and time. The parents were very stiff and not believable. I am only rating this one 3 stars but have no clue what age range to suggest for it. Children's films should not have any nudity and adults may not like the plotline as much as children. So teens and up if I have to say an age range.
