Earlier this year I bought an ASUS G2 gaming laptop which is one of the best computers I have ever had. ASUS included a really nice optical mouse with the computer that was also geared toward gaming, the Logitech MX518 optical mouse.
Logitech MX518
The mouse is black (not silver as stated in the specs) with a silver and black checkerboard design along the top and the left and right buttons. It has a scroll wheel that also acts as a third button and two side buttons above the thumb.
Forward of the scroll wheel is a single button with a plus sign on it that is used to increase the resolution of the mouse on the fly. Just behind the scroll is a button with a minus sign on it which is used to decrease the mouse resolution on the fly. Just behind that button there is another button that can be programmed but by default it tiles open windows. The two side buttons are used for forward and back on the web browser by default but they too are programmable using the Logitech software.
Feel
The mouse feels good in your hand and very natural. When you lay your hand across the mouse your fingers naturally fall in the right places without having to move your wrist or adjust your hand at all. I have a very large hand and the mouse fits me just fine. It is a right handed mouse and I dont know if Logitech makes a left handed model of this particular mouse.
I now have no problem using the mouse without hitting unwanted buttons but for a short time I did hit the resolution buttons sometimes while playing a game. When playing CounterStrike I would go to change weapons using the scroll button and sometimes hit the resolution button and that would cause the reaction of the mouse to slow. With practice I got used to it and now I dont have that problem. The thumb buttons are high enough that you wont hit them by accident.
Performance
The mouse supports three resolution; 800, 1200 and 1600 dpi. With the mouse set to 1600 dpi the accuracy is excellent for gaming. First person shooters are where the mouse shines. I used the mouse for CounterStrike: Source, HalfLife 2, Halo and Halo 2 and it performed fabulously during all four games.
The mouse also has a rather long cord (about 36 inches) which is good if youre using it on a desktop computer. It feels good and has a decent weight so it feels like you have something in your hand when playing, unlike some mice that are so light they dont even feel real. The mouse works with all flavors of Windows including XPx64 and Vista x64. I dont know if it works with MAC computers because I havent tried it but there is no specific claim that it does. It is a USB 2.0 mouse but it is backwards compatible with USB 1.1 as well. It uses infrared optical technology using a laser LED and an optical sensor for high resolution tracking.
Conclusion
I have been using the mouse for several months with my laptop and I dont even use the touchpad at all anymore. The mouse works wonderfully and I have no complaints. If you need a good high performance mouse and dont mind a wired connection, this is a really good one to check out.
