The Bottom Line 10 shows to tickle your fancy
As a TV buff I can appreciate a show or two. Unfortunately, nowadays there is just an overabundance of shows its impossible to check out all of them. This is why I left out some great shows such as Law and Order, Lost, Desperate Housewives among others, none of which Ive seen. This here is my top 10 shows on TV today (That Ive seen)
10. CSI Miami (CBS) - The only CSI I get to watch because its on so late, very intriguing and exciting, lot of special effects showcasing the nature of murders that take place and taught performances, primarily David Caruso. Well shot and acted, good suspenseful Drama.
9. Simpsons (FOX) - The animated show that stood the test of time thanks to great writing and funny situations. A great voice cast including Dan Castellaneta, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer and Julie Kavner and some cameo voices by todays stars. Animation is decent, but I think it was meant to be subdued and the storylines to stand out. 16 years and still going strong.
8. Best Week Ever (VH1) - A funny look at the weeks events seen through the eyes of todays comedians. Entertaining and funny, a lot of pop culture references and a nice interface make this a great show.
7. Scrubs (NBC) - This show is a comedy revolving around a hospital and it does something no other show could do before it, make a good, funny comedy even though it deals with sickness and death around the hospital. Kudos to the writers and talented cast, has style and substance and is worth a shot. Check out season 1 that just came out on DVD.
6. Arrested Development (FOX) - Filmed in the same fashion as Curb Your Enthusiasm, here Jason Bateman plays a business owner whose father Jeffrey Tambor is sent to jail and he needs to manage his dysfunctional family while living under the same roof, cute Portia De Rossi stars and the always funny David Cross as her husband. Very intuitive with some great funny dialogue and scripts. Underrated but definitely good.
5. King of Queens (CBS) - Kevin James plays an overweight Delivery man and his sexy wife Leah Remini live with her dad Jerry Stiller in their Queens home. Very funny, especially on James part, very talented physical comedian and Jerry Stiller as the neurotic dad highlight the show. No real premise here, just every day situations that turn into comedic gems.
4. Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) - Larry David (creator of Seinfeld) is showcased here in a very funny documentary style look at his life. He is, much like Seinfeld, very neurotic and inquisitive about pretty much anything no matter how important or minute it might be. A lot of improvisational comedy and a very unique idea for a show, Larry as Larry and his every day life, how many people can he annoy today? A lot of cameos from big stars and comedians and you have a well rounded, funny show with a bunch of gags.
3. Nip/Tuck (FX) - A revolutionary drama with a lot of suspense and adult situations. Revolves around 2 friends who own a plastic surgery practice, 1 a family man who is obsessed with his work, the other a playboy obsessed with his looks and youth. Very intriguing storylines and good performances by the cast makes his a show to check out
2. Whose Line is it Anyway? (ABC Family)- As a fan of comedy I have the utmost appreciation to those who can make up comedy on the spot, thats why I love this improvisational show, originally hailing from England and now hosted by Drew Carey and has talented comedians such as Wayne Brady, Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie. The performers are assigned situations and game and the results are incredibally funny. Games such as ׁ headed broadway star where 3 performers sing a song, but each sings only 1 word at a time, or moving people where audience members move the performers who pretend to be mannequins and act a situation based on that. All this along with countless fun games. Highly recommended.
1. Family Guy (Fox) - This has got to be the funniest animated show I have ever seen. With all due respect to The Simpsons and other animated great, The Family Guy stands out for me because its crude and spares no expense offending anyone and everyone. The animation fits the theme of the show perfectly and the situations are so hilarious you just sit there begging for more. Revolves around a dysfunctional family, husband Peter, an overweight shlub and his housewife Lois, their three kids Meg, Chris and evil talking baby Stewie and their alcohol abusing talking dog Brian. The show makes a lot of references to earlier TV shows and tears them apart. Do yourself a favor, either catch it currently on Fox or rent/buy the first 3 seasons DVD, you will absolutely love it!
