Airline travel with baby

The Bottom Line Always be prepared with toys and coloring books. Have them drink a bottle or sippy cup) during takeoff and landing to protect their ears. Have them in car seat.

My inlaws live 3000 miles away in california, so it is almost mandatory for us to fly out there yearly (at least). After we had our son (presently 16 months old), the thought of flying with him terrified me! At 4 months old, our first flight was at hand. I asked so many people for advice, and most told me, "Oh, you have to give him something to make him sleep on the plane!" All I could think of was, "medication for no reason??" I spoke to my pediatrician and he told me not to. I was glad that i asked. He also told me that my son had to have his own seat, with a car seat for him to be in for safety reasons. When i called the airline, they told me that he didn't have to, and they have no rules for babies under two years. After two you must purchase a ticket.

All that i could imagine was a screaming baby for 6 hours locked in a carseat, and me worrying about everyone giving me dirty looks! I thought about this often, and finally came up with a solution. We booked our tickets for overnight flights. I figured I would have a better chance of my son sleeping if we did that, without benedryl! We have taken three trips on airplanes since then, and it worked for us all except 1 return flight. Luckily, we flew Jetblue, so he just looked at the TV, and i brought snacks, so he munched too. Always be prepared with toys and coloring books, especially if you take a daytime flight. Have them drink a bottle (or from a sippy cup) during takeoff and landing to protect their ears from having too much pressure build-up, and most of all, get them their own seat. You will be glad you did in the long run, and that you did not have them squirming in your lap for a few hours.
