by Suzer | Jun 26 '05
Check your pets for any type of growth, and make sure the vet tests them for malignancy. Lastly, love your pets.

mast cell tumor(malignant (Reply to this comment)
by susiewho
Our beloved Chihuahua Weasel had what we were told was a sebaceous cyst. It would come and go, eventually it came and stayed and grew bigger. When we took him to another vet we were told it was Mast cell carcinoma. This Vet looked at us like we werew out of our minds for having "ignored" it. We went to a Veterinary Oncologist who gave him little hope but said he woud treat him with the strongest dose of chemo. Nothing worked. He died. We were devastated.

Great Advice (Reply to this comment)
by cubmomma

My cat ended up having a cancer mass in his belly that I knew nothing about until it was too late. Sadly, he never did like having his belly brushed.

Since you've seemed to catch it early, I'm sure your dog will do fine.

Thanks Loree.

I had just heard about the leukemia shots and cats getting fibrosarcomas. I lost one of my favorite cats, Vince, several years ago. Since that time I make sure my cats get their leukemia shots somewhere other than between the shoulder blades.

Rabies shots and cats (Reply to this comment)
by loree4
What an excellent review! Thank you.

Check your cats where they have been given a rabies shot for at least two months after the shot! I cannot stress this enough. They can get cancer from the shot, which is a very quick moving cancer.

My cat had a lump at that spot, and I immediately went to the vet. This is also where I stress that you get TWO OPINIONS.

The first vet I went to immediately wanted to cut his back leg off that very day. My husband and I then traveled to see an old vet of mine that had saved a prior cat of mine. Since I had caught it EARLY, we tried a round of anti-biotics...and the tumor shrunk, but not completely. So, we did surgery to remove the remaining lump and tested it for cancer.

Yes, fortunately it was benign. But, if we had not found it early, we would not have had an option of waiting to see if it was an infected area of cancer.

So, carefully check your furrballs, and always get second opinions!

Thank you for your review...what a great idea to write about it.

They may very well be nothing, but please take your dog for a second opinion at another pet clinic, just to be sure.

Glad to hear Mischa is okay. I hate steroids too, but they do have their value.

Tumors are Scary (Reply to this comment)
by shopprnicole
My dog has those tumors all over him! They just keep showing up. The vet said they are nothing to worry about and that its a fluid buildup. I keep getting worried though. 2 of them are the size of a baseball. For about a month I was taking him into the vet like once a week (every time I found something) because I make sure nothing gets by me.

My Mischa is fine...Whew...An allergy to something made her lose her fur..No lumps when he examined her so it must have been her position on me while she was on my lap..He gave her a shot of steroids..I'm not to crazy about that but it does seemed to have helped her since I don't see her scratch anymore..

Thanks again
cheers

Re: Annual checkup for pets (Reply to this comment)
by Suzer
Thanks Dave! Some people have told me (on a pet cancer support online group) that a vet told them their dogs had fatty deposits and didn't do a fine needle aspiration. They found out later it was in fact malignant. One lady was lucky. It was a year or two later when she went to a different vet and it was just Stage 1. Others not so lucky.

Thanks for the good advice. I take my dog in for a check-up every Spring. He has some spots on his belly but the vet said they were normal. Now I know he's in good health. Best wishes with the recovery! -Dave

They always tell us to check our moles/lumps/bumps as we of course should, but our pets are important members of the family too!

Excellent advice (Reply to this comment)
by PattyTherre
My little dog Mickey had a strange little bump on his belly that I assumed was nothing for a while. It would come and go so I thought it was just part of his anatomy. After about six weeks, I decided to check just to be sure and, to my absolute horror, found out he had a cancerous lump inside an entangled in his intestines. He had immediate surgery and I was told that he probably would not make it through the procedure.

A year later, he is as a healthy as a (12 pound) horse due to a great vet and not waiting too long to have the lump checked.

Your essay is such a good one. You should never overlook any sort of growth or bump on an animal (or human). Fast action can save their lives.

I'm sorry your dog has the growths, but sounds like he is happy and enjoying his life. As Mika is just 3 I had to have her surgery.

You were very fortunate Virginia, and I'm happy it worked out that way. My dog's growth was very aggressive, and I am so glad the vet checked it for malignancy even though he thought it was nothing.

Thanks Gael. I think better to check my dogs and cats myself regularly when we're petting or brushing them. If I had waited for an annual visit for Mika, she would have been too far along to save her or extend her life.

Wow, that's encouraging Carol. Thanks for sharing it. Hoping she remains healthy for many years to come!

I'm so crazy about this little dog even though I've only had her about 6 months. She is such a little sweetheart, and is great with crazy, over-the-top Lacy.

The expression basket case fits appropriately, though I seemed fine at work I'm sure.

Glad you are taking your Mischa in I love that name and named a kitten that when my rescue Siamese gave birth. She was pregnant when I took her in. I found Misha a great home.

Let me know what the vet says. Hopefully something very innocent.

So sorry your dog had that problem. I hope he does well and it doesn't come back. My 15 year old dog has several large cancerous tumors on him. One on each of his hind legs and one on his belly. The vet said he is really too old to try to remove them. He still jumps and plays and doesn't seem to be suffering yet. We are giving him lots of special attention in his last days.

Good luck to you and your beloved pet.

Hi Suzi - (Reply to this comment)

I am so glad your little dog is doing well and taking Mommy for mile long walks. Those little guys do get into our hearts - and that's why this review is so importnnt to us all.

A few years ago I had two old cats - Kittikat who was 19 years old and Zippy, her daughter, who was 18 years old. Once Zippy developed a lump on her throat that grew to be the size of a large marble. Her fur left it, and she seemed to me to be suffering. I took her to the vets - and he told me that he thought she might need surgery - amd he gave me a salve to rub on it. This salve tasted so bitter that she couldn't lick the spot, nor could her mother lick it for her. In two weeks the lump was gone and in three weeks she was completely healed. I think she scratched herself somehow and just kept washing it. Good luck to you and the rest of your charming doggy family.

Our pug too had some bumps growing. One especially was large and red which we had removed. Good to ask your vet to check them at every office visit. Hope your dog feels better soon!

for bringing this to lite. "Grand-ma-ma", a dachshund, had a lump or something on one of her mammary glands/nipples. When I squeezed it, some red pusey stuff came out. I took her in and it seemed she had a malignant mammary gland or breast cancer. It has been probably 5 years since her operation and she is doing well. Best wishes for your pet, who I'm sure is very much a part of your family.

worried you must have been...I'm always checking my cats when I brush them and have been a bit worried about my Mischa lately..She's been losing a lot of her fur along her back and when she was in my lap a few days I though I felt something...Though my hopeful self thinks it was just her rib, I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow.

I wish your dear dog a speedy, long lasting recovery.

Thanks for the great advice
