Choosing a mattress

The Bottom Line Bottom line: Buy a Gardner Mattress if they will deliver to you (www.gardnermattress.com) or try Chatham and Wells if not.

Where do I start? Everyone has their own opinions, problems and stories about a mattress and what I have learned so far is really plain old common sense as with any major purchase one might make. Let's say for instance that you have never owned a car before and you came and asked me which one to buy I would ask about your needs and budget and then I would inform you about an incredibly serious problem my family had with not one but two Volvos. Volvo actually handled it very well when they were made aware of it but the dealership (Jaffarian Volvo in Haverhill, Mass in case you wonder) could not have been less helpful during the process. You would then use that information in making a decision. The same process should hold true for a mattress. What this means is that you are looking for advice from someone that has had a good experience as well as a bad one. Both sides of the coin are important. Don't forget that a good mattress (I'm talking in King Size) should run somewhere between a minimum of $1500 - $3000 and a purchase of this amount is a serious purchase for almost anyone. You can spend much more than this but you should be able to get a decent mattress in this price range.

Anyway, don't rely on just these reviews here, ask your friends, family, local dealers and find out what mattress works for them and why. For me, I had a hard time replacing my favorite mattress of all time (Gardner Mattress from Massachusetts) because they don't service NY where I now live. I believe I have now found another company who makes a mattress of similar quality (dare I say if not better?) call Chatham and Wells. They are hand made mattresses from California with all the bells and whistles.

Anyway, for me, a hard mattress that does not sag is of supreme importance. I have a bad back and a hard mattress is one of the best cures for it. Gardner is great because they come in 5 different levels of firmness. Chatham and Wells is also great with a 20 year warranty!
