HomeEducationColleges and UniversitiesWhat Should I Know About Homeschooling?

Why I am not YOUR typical homeschool mom (but still a typical homeschool mom)

You just cannot generalize about homeschooling families. Homeschoolers no longer fit any set stereotype and homeschooling has become a valid and sometimes preferable educational choice.

Thanks for the wonderful review. You clearly know what you are talking about and I love that. All the people who are anti-homeschooling hardly ever know what they are saying about the topic. Especially the 'interacting with others' part of homeschooling.

My sisters and I were homeschooled from the beginning, however I attended private school for first and some of second grade (:D your son and I have a lot in common). Every year that I was homeschooled my mother would sit me down and ask me, "Do you want to go to school again?" I would say no and she would ask why. And every answer, even up to highschool, was, "I don't want all the drama." The drama in todays schools are crazy and stressful, even on the parents. I opt'd out of the stupid stuff and went head on to studying.

Results. Colleges jumped on me like a cheetah on a rabbit.

I think you made the right choice for you and your son. Good luck!

I think one reason that homeschooling works is because the kids who are homeschooled in good homeschool environments and go on to college, are obviously from strong home bases to begin with.

It might be a good study to find out the number of homeschooled kids who are not successful later on!
But the fact remains, that strong parents, strong families are the ones who homeschool successfully. These kids get the benefit of a strong sense of self within their families.

I wonder if we look in a classroom full of kids if we find the strong families, the kids who come from two parents, with structure if we could compare these kids to the homeschooled kids.

My brother went to a very bad public school. He's not really bright, his only interest is history. Due to the law it was either he gets into University or he goes to army after graduation from high school. My parents chose to homeschool him during his senior year. The results couldn't be better. Though he still had to go to class because my parents couldn't cover all the subjects but concentrated only on the ones he had for the entry exams at college. I'm impressed because my brother turned into a very smart individual. He had exams this week and even though we won't know if he got in till August 4, but something tells me that with his results he might as well did. I can't speak for my brother, but I thought this wouldn't never happen.

I wish you all the best with your initiative, because I strongly believe homeschooling is a great opportunity.

We haven't met with TOO MUCH resistance. Hubby and I tend to be individualists though who have always done our own thing. We moved to another state even though all our family lives in one state and we tend to be adventurers. My family also knows that I was a serious 'afterschooler' (didn't know it had a name 'til recently) meaning school didn't end when the school bell rang. My son always had additional school books we'd do at home and always did schoolwork throughout the summer. Of course, we get the socialization comments but anybody who spends any time with my son knows they don't really apply and if they don't spend much time with my son, they don't know him that well anyway (so we just ignore the comments). Just get yourself involved with a supportive homeschooling group. It helps.

Don't worry, I think once they see what your child (or children as the case may be by that time) is getting out of homeschool, the comments should lessen. I think we are just really fortunate to live in such a large homeschooling community. I mention that we homeschool and most people around here tell me that they think that is great. Best of luck to you.

Peachjam, I agree, I am really enjoying this time with my son. I thought it might drive me nuts but, let's see, I think we're in our fourth week now and he and I are growing even closer. He had been starting to get a little attitude every now and again and now that has all but disappeared. So far, this is a great fit for our family and I admire you and your wife for homeschooling four children. Boy, the amount of time I put in for just one child is amazing. My hat is off to you my friend =)

My favorite reason (Reply to this comment)

My own personal favorite reason for home schooling my four children (plus my wife and I are still in home school ourselves :-0) is that I get to have a deeper relationship with my children. It's not that I'm not tempted to want to send my children off for 5 hours a day for someone else to deal with, but the reward of having those hours together over the years will be something I would never want to trade.
Thanks for your great essay.

We just made the final decision to homeschool Beanie, at least for a year. I have met with SO much resistance from family it's now like an all-out war. Did you have any initial resistance?
