| popsrocks's Full Review: The Cromwell Harbor Motel, ME |
My wife, family and i have been visiting the bar Harbor- Acadia national park region for over 35 years. We camped many times and in the past fifteen years or so we found a little place outside of bar Harbor that was our home. Unfortunately that motel, cabin complex has moved condo and we were out on the streets again wondering where we would stay this year.
We decided on The Cromwell Harbor Motel because of it's nearby proximity to Bar Harbor. It's a short walk to the center of town yet still on the quieter outskirts. It also gives us a five minute ride access to Acadia National Parks entrances. One is at Sieur de Monts Springs and the other by private road toward Sand Beach. That's important to us because we spend just about every waking daytime hour in the park with afternoon stops to revive at a pool. Cromwell Harbor has one, it's clean, well maintained and we had a number of lovely after noon respite there from our exhilarating climbs on the Acadia trails.
Cromwell Harbor Motel
The outside looks of this motel on Route 3 just outside of town is quite pleasant. The white building have colourful floral arrangements of living planters and sculpted flowering gardens throughout. The property may be considered as sprawling with a number of buildings comprising the 26 rooms + it offers. Their web site conveniently and concisely says, The Cromwell Harbor Motel features 13 very nicely appointed Rooms with either one King bed on the Second Floor or two Queen beds on the Ground Floor as well as a three bed Family Room (1 Queen & 2 Singles). Each of these Rooms has a refrigerator and a microwave. A recent renovation is a King Bed Room with a kitchen area. We also have 13 smaller modest Rooms with one Queen Bed.
All 26 Rooms have full baths, C.C.T.V. . Phones with free local calling, coffee makers, guest controlled heat and air conditioning. Most Rooms have parking just outside the door. An added pleasure is our heated outdoor pool, seasonal only of course.
We happened to stay in "Johnny's Place" A fully equiped one bedroom apartment with washer/dryer, whirlpool tub, queen size craft-matic bed, living room with full size sleeper sofa and big screen TV. that is available for weekly rates.
Our Experience
We have been familiar with this motel for many years. Back when we were camping we invited our parents at different times to explore the island with us. We booked them at Cromwell Harbor and they were quite pleased back then.
This year we made our reservations back in April or so. You do have to book early if making specific plans. Upon arrival we were expecting to have to take two separate rooms the first night because Johnny's Place wasn't available until the next day for a week as per our original arrangements. Apparently they threw Johnny outta da place early and put on the air purifiers to get the smokey odor out of the rooms. They do work and my nose sensitive wife had no problems after a first minor wiff of tightly rolled American tobacco.
The front desk had all set up at arrival but it seems that the motel is run under the strong hand of John and he was sure to finalize all our accommodation questions.
Johnny's Place is on the property of the motel but in the back a bit and accessed by a side street. That worked fine for us. The property outside of Johnny's Place on a very large graveled parking/storage area also seconds as a shaping up place for a few lobstermen by the looks of the equipment stored there. Let me tell ya, either lobstermen are very neat or Johnny keeps those guys keepin' their gear in good order too. All is neat, clean and no, no not even a scent of sea odors.
It's a seventeen step rise to the apartment. It was all carpeted and aside from some boot marks on the carpeting at Johnny's recliner in front of the large size TV all was very clean. The good sized main room also has a sleeper sofa that my daughter said was comfortable enough. A roll out bed was available for my other daughter. A full kitchen with pots pans and all was convenient. A small deck was outside the kitchen door. Twice people locked themselves out there. They have the door knobs that can open a door from inside without unlocking the outside entry side. Be careful, you really don't want to be
My wife and I had the privacy of a separate room with a queen size craft-matic bed. It wasn't as comfortable for me as the name conjures. My wife was just fine. I liked that there were plenty of hangers and dresser draws for our "stuff". Lighting was good and the bedroom has an A/C. The other room didn't but with the Maine's night air temperatures, it's not a necessity. A fan for moving air around is. The apartment has two ceiling fans and the front office was kind enough to lend us a box fan for the week.
We actually liked that the room did NOT have daily cleaning service, though I did wonder why an envelope for a tip was there on the first day. A vacuum is in the apartment along with iron and board, hair dryer, coffee pot, toaster, microwave, oven, stove and best of all for our family needs, a washer and dryer. Extra towels were given to us for the pool but we had to wash all the regular towels there. No prob. The office was kind enough to give us rolls of toilet paper when needed. I suppose John finished up his Sears catalogs.
As far as service in the separate apartment it was good. We had a clogged toilet and looked around for a plunger. None in site. I took a ride to the office, Pops doesn't walk in between hikes on mountain trails, and asked for a plunger. The gal said she had to get John she thought he was in the garage. Geeze, I think, he's a bit to big for me to stick in the bowl and push up and down. As it happens, John comes with the plunger. It was a nifty looking thing that really had me wanting to try and clear out the bowl myself. Anyways, John went in the room, and was out in a flash and then gave me a three minute PK, Product Knowledge course, on how that plunger, that can be purchased at True Value Hardware stores, works.
In Closing
Though we didn't stay in the regular rooms we know they look good and are clean. This place is meticulous in it's detail. The lawns were neatly cut in diagonal stripes and every flower was blooming like entries in a state fair competition.
We were quite pleased with our accommodations at Johnny's Place. The shower/whirlpool tub was easy to regulate with plenty of hot water after a wait of a minute or two. We however have one haunting with the TV set when it would suddenly raise its voice at us and every time we lowered the volume, it spoke up again at the loudest setting. Fortunately that lasted just one night and one episode. I believe that may have been the evening of a full moon.
We loved having the washer dryer. It made our usual half week stop at the local laundromat unnecessary. Cleaning the place ourselves was no biggy. The gals vacuumed a couple of times and the kitchen even had a dishwasher.
Having breakfast in the apartment a number of mornings, making sandwiches for lunch a few times, and cooking a large pasta dinner one night helped keep costs down. They do need to get a strainer/colander for a pound of pasta though. I'm a big eater.
The room was secure, we had trash picked up daily outside our door and the place was quiet. We slept in late almost everyday cause of the sounds of silence.
We will return but do know, when we do no one else is allowed to have Johnny's Place. It's ours.
