I found out about magic jack through my sister in law (who bought one as well) & she had me convinced to ditch Vonage because I'd only have to pay $20 a year for the same kind of phone service through magic jack. I was perfectly happy with Vonage, but paying $20 a year compared to $30 a month was a steal! I did the 30 day free trial, & everything ran smoothly within that trial time. But then I started having issues about a month or so later that got worse the longer I waited to have the money to switch back to Vonage.
• Calls would constantly get dropped• Either the person I'd be talking to couldn't hear me or I couldn’t hear them
• Sometimes the phone would play music as if I were on hold, then drop the call
• Sometimes the magic jack program would automatically restart itself
• Whether I’d hit redial, double click on the phone number I want to dial or entered the number myself, magic jack would partially dial the number which would then give me some automated voice telling me how to correctly dial a phone number
• Local calls would be badly broken up
• Can’t talk on the phone & play on Xbox Live at the same time or else the calls would get dropped
I’ve dealt with the customer service team multiple times. They definitely don’t have a clue. Their biggest “fix all” is to unplug the jack from your computer, wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in & give it a try. Every rep I’ve spoken to has had other tricks to fixing my magic jack, but none of them worked. One time they told me I needed a new phone, another time they said I needed to buy a new USB cord that connects the jack to the computer.
Today I got so fed up with magic jack, I went to the chat room to demand they end my services. One of the customer service reps first asked for details about my problems, then asked me if I was sure I wanted my phone service ended, then tried to solve my problems by telling me to unplug my jack from the computer for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Yeah, no. I’m going back to Vonage.
