The Bottom Line Bart gets to ride in the front seat because he's good at sports.

Special thanks goes out to Puckmugger for inviting me to participate in his sports write off. I must admit I’ve become very cynical when it comes to sports these days, but I still enjoy talking about it quite a bit. And, I do watch plenty on TV. So, here is my entry…

1.What are your favorite sports to watch on television? In the good ol’ days I would have quickly answered baseball or college basketball. But, with the greediness and free agency that’s plagued baseball and the early entrees into the NBA I don’t get as much satisfaction from watching those now. So, I would have to go with college football. I spend my Saturday’s in the fall at my buddy’s house with at least two TVs going. He’s a dang Notre Dame fan so we have to watch that game (I take special pleasure in watching them lose), but the other is used to tune into various other games. I also enjoy watching golf quite a bit, especially the majors.

2. How often do you watch sports on television? Watching or having on the TV? There’s a big difference. I probably have sports on almost every day, but I’m not always “watching” it. In the fall, I actually watch sports at least three days a week (Thursday, Saturday and Sunday). Other times of the year it’s probably more like twice a week. Of course, whenever I can actually watch a Spurs game on TNT or ESPN, that’s going to be on.

3. What are your favorite sports to watch live? College football is the best. And, while I’ve never seen a NHL game, the minor league hockey games I’ve seen are pretty entertaining.

4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually? Usually one college football game a year (University of Texas) and then a couple of NBA games, ideally when the Spurs visit the Rockets as I live in Houston.

5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously? Growing up, I played both basketball and baseball. I enjoyed basketball better, but my talent was in baseball. I gave up basketball when I started high school and played baseball all the way through college.

6. What organized individual sports have you participated in previously? I was quite good at tennis as a youngster, but a whacked out decision by my coach soured me. The story is quite interesting. Anything that I hit, I do left-handed (baseball, golf, tennis, etc.), but everything else I do right handed. So, my coach saw me throw a tennis ball right-handed and was convinced that I should switch to playing tennis right-handed. I did it and definitely had more power, but my control was lost. I simply had to concentrate so hard when playing that it wasn’t fun anymore. Now, when I play recreationally, I’ve gone back to left-handed.

7. What pick-up sports have you participated in previously? Pretty much only basketball. There’s not much of a market for any other pickup games.

8. What sports or outdoor activities do you currently participate in? Softball. Mmmm beer.

9. How often? I play softball once a week for my team and I’ll fill in every once and a while on other teams.

10. Is there any sport that you wish you could participate in now? I’d love the chance to play football. I was small as a kid and never got to play, but I loved flag football in college and I was quite good. It always made me think “what if?”

11. What’s keeping you from doing it? Well, if we are talking about “real” football, that would be silly. If we are talking about flag football, none of my friends play. And, it’s hard enough to get people to commit to one sport, i.e. softball, let alone two.

12. If your fairy godmother was going to give you all the skill and a job in pro sports, what sport would you play? I think I would like to be a major league closer. There are so many perks. You get to hang out for the whole game and the get to make a grand entrance for you one inning of work. I can’t decide on which song I’d like to play during my epic walk to the hill. I could go with the sarcastic route and choose, “Why Can’t We Be Friends” or something heavy hitting from Pearl Jam.

13. What team and position (if relevant)? In the 80’s and 90’s I would have wanted to play with the Mets. Now, it wouldn’t really matter.

14. What beer would you promote as a sports celebrity? (OK, that was just to make certain Bruguru, Marty and Fuche participate) That’s easy. I would be responsible for taking Shiner Bock national.

15. What brand would you promote? I’m a Nike guy all the way. Plus a good buddy of mine works for them so he could probably get some sort of finders fee.

16. Do you have any sports heroes? Who are they and why are they your heroes? I don’t know if hero is the word, but I did have a few favorite players growing up. First and foremost was Darryl Strawberry. Obviously now I could care less about him and how his selfishness screwed up everything for him. Now, I’d probably have to say David Robinson. He was a great player and an even better person. Outside of San Antonio, nobody probably has any idea the amount of charity work he does. And, he does it the right way…with both money and time. He is truly a class act and an athlete that actually deserves to be though of as a hero.

17. If you could invent a new sport, no matter how absurd, what would it be? We actually created one in our office. It’s called “doubley” and it consists of two nerf basketball goals on top of each other. You get one point for making it in either the top or bottom hoop. But, if you can make it in both on the same shot, you get the “doubley” bonus and get three points.
