Sealing My Doom: Joining Puckmugger's Write-offJul 08 '05 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Toys, yeah. Books, Movies...sure. Sports? Nnnnngh... I thought I'd try and join Puckmugger's Write-off, because I consider myself many things, but not an athlete. So this'll be good to examine that part of my life and maybe go out on a limb with something new. Here's the link to his Write-Off and Challenge. It's not for the faint of heart. http://www.epinions.com/content_4427194500 And here we go! 1. What are your favorite sports to watch on television? The only sports I ever watch on television are basketball and football, and those only occasionally. I prefer following college sports, because the elitism and money-grubbing bastardry of the pro players interferes with my enjoyment of the games. Plus, Utah isn't exactly excelling with their professional teams...team...the Utah Jazz. So it's more entertaining and better for my self esteem to follow my alma mater, the University of Utah, which had both #1 draft picks (Alex Smith into the NFL, Andrew Bogut into the NBA--go Utes!) this year. 2. How often do you watch sports on television? Every other week except for playoffs, and then it's almost daily, depending on the teams. When it gets to the point that I hate or resent everyone who's left, I go back to my regular diet of Buffy, Lost, Smallville, and Arrested Development. 3. What are your favorite sports to watch live? We've had a lot of fun taking our boys to minor league baseball games this year--they're both still really young, so we typically only make it through five or six innings, but it's become a fun family tradition. Other than that, I enjoy basketball, football, soccer and hockey live...much better than on TV. 4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually? Anywhere from six to twelve, depending on our time and money budgets. 5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously? Nada. My parents couldn't afford to put me in Little League, and by the time I got to high school I was pretty sure I had no athletic bones in my body. I've been tempted to try some community rec basketball or softball in recent years--maybe someday I'll get the cajones to try it. 6. What organized individual sports have you participated in previously? See above. 7. What pick-up sports have you participated in previously? Volleyball, basketball, baseball. Usually not pretty, although I haven't completely shamed myself. 8. What sports or outdoor activities do you currently participate in? Right now we're doing a lot of walking with the boys, I try to go running three times per week. Other than that, we do a lot of "family friendly" stuff like croquet, badminton, hiking, camping, etc. This summer we've gone to the pool at least twice per week, although that's mostly splashing in the water, not swimming laps or anything. 9. How often? See above. 10. Is there any sport that you wish you could participate in now? I'd like to try basketball, volleyball, and softball as part of a team. 11. Whats keeping you from doing it? Time constraints (even getting out of the house with a one year old and three 1/2 year old is a killer) and fear of letting down my team members. I don't want to be the worst player on the team. Especially with my mouth. 12. If your fairy godmother was going to give you all the skill and a job in pro sports, what sport would you play? Probably soccer. As long as the whole godmother thing is involved, and not effort on my part. 13. What team and position (if relevant)? Frankfurter Allgemein 14. What beer would you promote as a sports celebrity? (OK, that was just to make certain Bruguru, Marty and Fuche participate) I wouldn't--not a beer drinker. But I'd promote Coca-Cola or anything in that family. 15. What brand would you promote? Either Adidas or LEGO. Take yer pick. 16. Do you have any sports heroes? Who are they and why are they your heroes? It takes a lot for me to call someone my hero--in the sports world, too often their egos get in the way of my admiration. The two guys who I do consider heroes are John Stockton of the Utah Jazz and Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles. Both showed a professionalism, talent, dedication, and overall humility that set them apart from all of the other players. There are other athletes I admire, but I'd like to think if I were a "star" athlete, I'd be a guy like either Stockton or Ripken. I'd probably end up a jerk like Kobe, but hey. That's why those two are my heroes. 17. If you could invent a new sport, no matter how absurd, what would it be? Something in the flavor of a gladiator game involving toddlers, shopping carts, laundry baskets, and padded walls. And big helmets. And sharp sticks. Okay. I did it. Exorcised a few demons, got some stuff of my chest. Now to see if I'm brave enough to attempt something new. Don't hold your breath. Puckmugger says it's bad for you. |
