I never suspected that they would all have the last laugh. In my incessant mockery of the song and the Boys who delivered it, I had inadvertently, and quite terrifyingly, become a fan.

The same thing happened to me with Patrick Swayze. Well, except I never Dirty Danced for Girl Scouts in the grocery store. And I did decline when asked to bring law to a lawless strip club (Dammit Bambi, I'm a DJ not a bouncer!). And although I do in fact own a Ronald Reagan rubber mask, I never used it as a disguise while robbing a bank with Keanu Reeves. . .but despite having never done all that, I am still certifiably Swayze Crazy.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

My friend Ethan has this theory that if you hate something really strongly, you'll eventually love it. That's how he became an *NSYNC fan, supposedly. And, incidentally, it's the plot of a lot of chick flicks. The Backstreet Boys certainly have well-produced, infectious melodies. "I Want it that Way" builds up to a brilliant bridge, and I can't help but sing along to their new one, "Incomplete." Perhaps, I'm still a 12-year-old girl at heart, too.

That song rulz. End of story.

Of course, I've performed it as well, back in the college days (in front of a thousand-ish people, no less). We also did a parody called "I Wanted Pancakes". Either way, that melody never has come out of my head, to the point where I still reference it as a comparison point to the fifth song on the new Rob Thomas album.

It's just a great song. And this is a great writeup.

Paul,

Oddly enough, I thought that "I Want it That Way," like "MMMBop" in 1997 or "Since U Been Gone" this year (which I'll go on the record now saying will top the Pazz & Jop singles poll, assuming the Franz Ferdinand backlash holds through the year's end), was in the class of mainstream pop songs that most hipsters actually like-- ironically, sure, in some cases, but that still counts.

Of course, I could be biased, in that I'm distantly related (in that "from Kentucky" way...) to two-fifths of the group in question. Jealous? You so are.

Yeah. These essays are fantastic, even by your standards.

Best,
Jonathan
