The Bottom Line This citrus- enhanced beer is hoppy and great- tasting, with a beautiful appearance and enticing aroma.
Boulder Beer Company is the state of Colorados oldest microbrewery and it has been producing fine craft brew for more than 35 years running. I got to resample some of the beer from this company recently when I received a shipment in the mail from the MicroBrew of the Month Club. One of the products I received was Mojo IPA Ale, a fruity version of an American IPA. Basic Characteristics of This Beer: This product has a golden/orange hue and an aroma that is very citrus- like, floral, piney, and enticing. The foam is nice, with a good pour resulting in a hefty white topping that lasts for a good long time, leaving lace along the sides of your glass as you consume. Flavors present in this beer include citrus fruit- a combination of lemon, grapefruit, and orange-, light toasted malt, a touch of caramelized sugar, and spice. There is a certain oily texture felt in the mouth as you drink. The beer finishes with a bitterness that reminds me of spices used in Italian food dishes, mixed with a grapefruit/lemon/lime mixture. The bitterness lingers on in the aftertaste, which is fruity and leaves you licking your lips. Boulder Beer brews this product using pale, caramel, and wheat malts along with Amarillo and Centennial hops. The bitterness level is higher than average, with a rating of 70 IBU. Alcohol is also higher than the average beer, with 6.8 percent by volume. Food Compatibility: This beer would match up well with spicy chicken, fish, pork, and other light meats. With taste characteristics like these, this beer is one of the few that would make a good companion to full meals. It seems like the perfect companion to a meal that includes foods like chicken prepared with citrus juices and spices, whipped potatoes, green vegetables, and a side salad. Final Thoughts: Mojo IPA is one of Boulder Beer Companys premier lineup of Looking Glass Series brews- a small group of specialty brews made exclusively for discerning tastes. There are currently three different beer products in this lineup, and they are all brewed with quality and attitude in mind. This beer is brewed in the tradition of an American IPA. It combines flavors of citrus and light malt with a somewhat oily mouth feel and a spicy finish. This beer has a bitterness rating of 70 IBU- a level that would likely scare away many potential drinkers. But the truth is the bitterness level is not as extreme as the numbers indicate. The reason is due to the underlying sweetness of the pale and wheat malts, coupled with the prevailing taste of citrus. Yes, bitterness dominates. But dont think for a second that this beer is the type that will make you twist and contort your face in unusual ways, like the people who starred in the old Keystone beer commercials. This beer isnt like that. Another positive characteristic of this beer is its appearance. The foam is solid, sturdy, and downright beautiful. Sitting atop the lovely body of orange/gold liquid, this beer has an appearance that makes it second to none. From the foam, to the aroma, to the taste, to the finish, all the way to the aftertaste, this beer is distinct and memorable. The most dominant taste in this beer is that of citrus fruit. For this reason, this beer might not be suitable to everyones taste or needs. If youre serving food like steak or some other beef dish, for example, this beer would probably not make the best choice for a drinking companion. Likewise, if youre looking for a beer that is dominated more by the malt and more meaty in texture, then this beer is not for you. Mojo IPA may not be the most versatile beer and it might fall a few points short of perfect, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Im going to rate this beer 4.5 out of 5 stars. It has most all of the qualities that I like in an IPA, even if it does go a little overboard on the citrus taste. |
