that the Mozilla Firefox browser has a (for me, at least) very reliable and customizable popup blocker built in.

Re: Great Reference (Reply to this comment)

Hey thank you for reading and rating my review. I am glad you finally found a security suite that keeps your computer secure. Norton has removal utilities to get rid of the left overs from it's programs. Just go to notron.com and search with keywords like "norton removal" or "removal tool."
I agree with you that you can never have too much security when it comes to viruses, hackers, spyware, data loss, and more.
I am glad you think this article will help people be better protected.
Once again thank you for your time.

Great Reference (Reply to this comment)
by vplite
This article is a great reference for someone wanting to get a better understanding of threats to their computer.
I was a Norton Symantec fan until a year ago when it caused Outlook (OfficeXP) to stop functioning. Uninstalling and reinstalling Norton fixed the problem, but my subscription was almost expired, so I decided to try something different. It was a nightmare to get Symantec off of my computer, even though I did a proper uninstall. There were over 200 registry entries that I had to manually delete. I'm still not certain I have cleaned all of it off.
Since I have Charter broadband gold ($40/mo free protective software), after I uninstalled Norton Systemworks I loaded Charter High-Speed Security Suite, which has a firewall, antivirus, and popup blocker which I have found to be effective. It is a commercially available product named F-Secure. I did have to uninstall and reinstall the product a week ago when I begain noticing it took forever to shutdown my computer, and I figured out that F-Secure was the problem.
I also have a firewall on my wireless router and have XP Pro's firewall turned on. As my last line of defense, I image each of my computers' main hard drives on a weekly basis using Norton Ghost, to a second hard drive I install in each of my builds, just in case. You can buy a huge PATA or SATA hard drive for less than $100, and have a second place to save vital data. HDs are easy to install. If you don't want to do it yourself Best Buy charges $40 plus the cost of the drive. Last week my wife opened an attachment in an email from someone she did not know, and even with all the security we had, her computer was infected with a virus that was newer than our definitions. No sweat - I just installed last week's image and copied over files newer than a week that we had saved on the second HD.
Bottom line - I don't think you can have too much security. I agree it is better to pay for security software than suffer the consequences of a lapse in security. For those like myself who heavily depend on their computers, I would add a backup hard drive and imaging software.
Vchand, you are a welcome addition to those of us providing computer information in Epinion. I look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

Oh and I might give AVG another try.

Re: norton (Reply to this comment)
by vchand
Well, I have been using Norton too, but the only thing I don't like about it is that it uses a lot of system resources. I think it even slows down my computer. Thats why I am looking for an alternative.
I like Mcafee and ZoneAlarm but not too much. I like Mcafee's user inteface and ease of use, but hate the update feature (maybe the new versions are better). I also like ZoneAlarm, but sometimes it blocks my internet connection totally without the stop all internet activity turned on. I don't know what it is. Maybe it doesn't like Norton installed at the same time. Who knows...

Good Info. (Reply to this comment)
by AdaDavis
I used to have Norton, but the latest version kept causing problems on Windows XP when I loaded Firefox.
I am now using the freeware version of AVG with ZoneAlarm Pro and SpyStopper 3.0. I occasionally check with SpyBot to catch ads that slip past SpyStopper, but I have never had a worm get past Spystopper. All four of these programs "play well together" on Win XP with Firefox and Eudora Pro.

Re: Re: 2005 NORTON Anti-Virus really SUCKS! - I do (Reply to this comment)
by JAGUARDOG
I have had Adware and Spybot on my PC for a year now and neither one works the way it should. First off Adware begins to run and after running for about 15 minutes and shows it has found many errors/problems etc. and that it has completed about 75 to 80% of it's Scan it freezes up and will not finish on my PC anyway. I have tried it many, many times to include rebooting my PC but it never completes. I even uninstalled it, deleted it and re-installed it from download.com and still does not finish running.
Secondly I also have used my Spybot program many times and it does find problems although not all of them. It deletes only about 80% of those and indicates it cannot delete or fix the others. The worst part about Spybot is it ALWAYS downloads 15 spyware temp files itself to my PC so what good is it if I have to find them and delete them manually?
Do you have any other suggestions that could maybe help me and my PC please? I must assume all this happens to me and my PC only as I never hear or read about others having any problems with either one of those 2 programs? I now have a new problem that cropped up about 5 days ago. Whenever I turn my Popup stopper program off for a second to click on a link to open a second program a popup is always there to jump onto my PC, like its hiding waiting for me to open it up. It is the same one called great websites and I cannot stop it in time and it adds itself to my PCs registry and wont let me delete it. I have to reboot my PC if I want to be able to delete it every time, any suggestions for that problem as well would greatly be appreciated?
Maybe we could email back and forth or chat on Yahoo or MSN? Sorry for the very long complaining comment.

Re: 2005 NORTON Anti-Virus really SUCKS! (Reply to this comment)

From what you wrote, it sounds like a adware/spyware problem. Norton Antivirus 2005 does not scan for all of these. I suggest you get the free version of adaware or spybots search & destroy. They will surely get rid of all your pop-ups and porn downloads. An antivirus software cannot deal with spyware or adware.
This happened to me too, a lot of times. Not now but a couples years back. After struggling with it for a while, like you, I decided to research and get rid of them once and for all. That is how I can say that you need some kind of adware or spyware remover. I highly recommed having at least a firewall, an antivirus software, and some kind of spyware/adware remover. This will keep your computer from this problem.

2005 NORTON Anti-Virus really SUCKS! (Reply to this comment)
by JAGUARDOG
I have NORTON for a few years without a single problem. When it came to renew for my 2005 version a month ago I gladly did so quickly. I have had nothing but problems with it and my PC since the day I installed the new version. Here is just a little of what I have had to put up with thanks to Mr. Norton:
I have been struggling with Computer problems for over 2 weeks now. Believe it or not, last Saturday I spent from 12:30 PM to 11:30 PM, a total of 11 hours trying to fix problems on my PC. Sunday I spent another 6 hours and then Monday night I spent 3 hours on it. I fixed all the problems it had all three days but each day after I turn it on for the day I have to fight with it again.
Pop-ups galore get by my pop-up stopper, things are downloading on my PC without my knowledge and causing me to have errors and shutting my PC down. Three days in a row this one very strange icon has downloaded onto my desktop with the name of "LOVE" underneath it and showing a woman's "BIG BUTT". I'm not complaining about the Butt itself since I'6m a Butt Man and it's a very, very nice butt, I'm just tired of PORN downloading on my PC for no reason at all. My NORTON Anti-Virus is not working properly and I have had to uninstall it and re-install it 5 or 6 times. If it was not for my Go-Back program I would not have a PC at all. I am typing this up at work today and hope when I get home tonight at 6 PM that I finally have a day where I will NOT have to fight with that darn sorry Computer for a change?

Hey,
Lots of great, useful tips all in one place!
Personally, I like AVG. I have the free version and it works fine for me. To each his own, I guess.
I'll be using this as a reference tool. Thanks again.

Interesting article (Reply to this comment)

I THINK it was SpyBot that searched my h/d for free, but when I wanted it to get rid of some spyware, they wanted to charge me.
I use McAfee for Firewall and virus protection
Cox (my ISP) for spam
AdAware (free) for spyware
Thanks for bringing this to folk's consciousness.

Thank you for reading, rating, commenting. And thanks for pointing out the spelling mistake. I am glad you found the article very helpful. It took me three days of researching to put this together. Once again, thank you.
By the way, try Spybot and Adaware together, it might help.
