The Bottom Line Epinions has been a part of my life for way over a year...so I'm sharing my thoughts in this Write-Off.
In honor of romasuave's 100th Epinion, I've accepted his kind and gracious invitation to participate in his newest Write-Off! To enter or just read the other entries, please visit http://www.epinions.com/content_4445347972. Member Name and meaning behind it (if there is one) alexdg1 is nothing more and nothing less than the username I chose when I opened my very first e-mail account back when all I had was Juno free e-mail. I kept that username when I made the jump from free e-mail to (supposedly) cheap Internet service provider, then carried it over to Yahoo Mail and Messenger. What does it mean? It's just my first name and the first letters of my last name (Diaz-Granados, which is not a combined last name. Date I joined Epinions December 12, 2003, less than three months before my 41st birthday How I stumbled upon Epinions I'd been writing reviews for almost a year at Amazon when an online acquaintance who had read a few of them suggested I submit reviews here as well. She said she thought Epinions would be a bit more, er, rewarding, since all Amazon gives its best reviewers is a rank based on how many positive votes they earn on their customer reviews. I was skeptical, and for about three months I hemmed and hawed, but finally, on December 12, 2003, I submitted my first review....which was a draft of a similar review I'd done for Amazon. Number of member visits As I write this on July 19, 26,598 Number of total visits As of July 19, 2005, 59,202 My very first review (with link and description) My very first Epinion was a review of The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection; it still has only 25 member visits (okay, 26 if I include a hidden revenge rater) but it's netted me 69 cents, one comment, and was my first VH review.) The 3 favorite reviews that Ive written (with links) Of over 570 reviews as of this writing, these are my favorites: 1. The Star Wars Trilogy DVD Set 2. Summer of '42 3. Band of Brothers I like #1, obviously, because I'd been waiting for a while for the Star Wars Classic Triilogy to be released on DVD, so I gave it my all when I wrote the review. #2 is a review of one of my favorite coming-of-age movies. #3 is my review of the best miniseries ever made for television, even though I had to borrow the DVD set to watch it. My most complete review At the risk of being redundant, it's a tossup between The Star Wars Trilogy DVD Set and Band of Brothers. My most successful Write-Off I've not hosted a Write-Off, although if enough Epinions members show any interest, I can turn my Sad Songs list into a W/O. Any input on this would be welcome...... (Update: Okay...I did create a Write-Off and it's going fairly well. You can find it at Songs That Make You Misty Eyed W/O.) Favorite W/O I participated in I've participated in several, including this one, but I'd have to say my favorites are JAGUARDOG's A-Z Music W/O and Ada Davis' Open Ended W/O My most lucrative review (with link and $$$ earned) West Side Story [Remaster] - Original Broadway Cast....it's earned me $7.83 Things I like most about Epinions: Besides having a place where I can express myself as a writer while still (hopefully) contributing to the world at large by writing reviews and whatnot (and getting a few cents here and there!), I've found that Epinions is a great online community where I've made a few friends. Things I dislike most about Epinions : Hidden raters who rate well-written and otherwise well-received reviews Off Topic, Not Helpful, or Somewhat Helpful out of spite and not because the review was badly-written or is inaccurate. It's petty and small-minded. (And, pray tell, why is a poem considered to be Not Helpful or Off Topic in the Writer's Corner poetry section?) Members I admire most on Epinions With 164 people on my Web of Trust, it's quite a challenge to pick out the best of the bunch -- but three Epinions members I admire the most are: Millinocket: Recently named Category Lead in Movies, Sue is not only a great reviewer, but she's really a classy lady who rates fairly and leaves comments that are pleasant to read and insightful. Bryan_Carey: a.k.a. Bryan the Great, in my book. Hardly a day goes by when I'm not reading an Epinion from one of the most prolific and varied writers on this site. leedug: Leigh is, without a doubt, another class act. She's one of the nicest and kindest persons here, and I'm glad I've gotten to know her a bit. She's very helpful and nice, but more important, she's intelligent, funny, and a true friend. Recently, Leigh earned her Top Reviewer "hat" in Kids and Family; read her reviews and see why deserves it. My ultimate goal at Epinions While it would be nice to be an Advisor in Movies someday, my ultimate goal is to continue writing worthwhile reviews, helping the Epinions community thrive, and, of course, make a few more friends along the way. |
